Matt Riddle claims Brock Lesnar booked himself to win the 2022 Royal Rumble

Wrestling: WWE-Royal Rumble Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Riddle has re-emerged on the pro wrestling scene in a big way over the past week, and that included dropping some interesting quotes during a virtual signing with Signed by Superstars yesterday (Jan. 8).

The main one grabbing headlines has to do with the 2022 Royal Rumble match. Riddle says he was at one point supposed to win the battle royal for a main event title shot at WrestleMania 38, but that after losing the WWE title earlier in the show to Bobby Lashley (due to Roman Reigns’ involvement), Brock Lesnar essentially booked himself to win it.

So, I believe — you know, it’s sports entertainment — but I was told at one point I was going to win the Rumble and everything else. And then what was it? Bobby Lashley beat Brock Lesnar because somebody came in and hit him with the belt or what have you.

“Then Brock came in, didn’t want to do business with everybody, said he was winning [the Rumble match], and then he won. None of the producers, nobody stood up to him and they let him do it. I didn’t either.”

Buy it or not, Riddle’s account pretty much lines up with the historical record: both the results from St. Louis on Jan. 29, 2022 and the rumor mill at the time. A PWInsider report following the show said that Riddle was originally booked to win that Rumble, but plans changed frequently before settling on Lesnar.

Riddle also would have had good reason to not tell this tale prior to his WWE release, as publicly calling out Lesnar is one of the things company officials — and Lesnar — allegedly disliked about how Riddle conducted himself during his time with WWE.

But now he’s free to speak his mind, so we get stories like this one.
