Whether for his Hall of Fame football career or his post-retirement one as as professional opinion-haver on FOX and ESPN, sports fans know who Shannon Sharpe is. Recently, even folks who refer to the games many of us are obsessed with as “sportsball” became familiar with Sharpe when clips from his recent interview with comedian Katt Williams went viral.
It wasn’t a video of Katt riffing on Jonathan Majors, Kevin Hart or Joe Rogan that got Unc on Triple H’s radar, though. It was a different segment from Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast brand — one of him talking about his childhood love of Georgia Championship Wrestling. The three-time Super Bowl champion mentioned not only watching Gordon Solie-called matches on television, but driving around his home state to see stars like Dusty Rhodes and Andre The Giant. Shouting out faves like Bobo Brazil, Ox Baker, Harley Race, and Nick Bockwinkel really proved his “one of us” cred.
And that was enough to get WWE’s Chief Creative Officer to send an invitation to Shannon & his whole crew. Trips quote-tweeted (sorry, “reposted”) the above to say:
Some big events coming up on the calendar. Maybe Pat McAfee won’t be the only ESPN personality at WrestleMania this year?
