WWE SmackDown preview (Jan. 5, 2024): Roman Reigns doesn’t sweat The Rock

SmackDown airs tonight (Jan. 5) with a live show emanating from Rogers Arena in Vancouver. This is the sixth episode of SmackDown during the nine week build towards Royal Rumble 2024, which takes place on January 27.

Roman Reigns doesn’t sweat The Rock

The Rock kicked off 2024 by returning to WWE Raw and whooping Jinder Mahal’s candy ass. As the segment came to an end, The Rock said he might have to take a seat at the Head of the Table, teasing a future match against WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

The Tribal Chief will appear on tonight’s New Year’s Revolution episode of SmackDown, where he should have some kind of response to The Rock, even if he doesn’t directly address The People’s Champion. Based on his social media reaction, Roman doesn’t take The Rock’s words seriously just yet, so it’s possible that Reigns and Paul Heyman will continue to laugh it off and dismiss The Rock when they have the mic in their hands tonight.

Roman’s bigger priority in the short-term is to focus on the winner of tonight’s triple threat match between LA Knight, Randy Orton, and AJ Styles. The winner gets a title match against Reigns later this month at Royal Rumble. From where I’m sitting, Orton looks like the favorite, while Styles and Knight will probably continue to fight each other heading into the Royal Rumble match.

But no matter who emerges as the winner, will The Bloodline strike after the match is over and take him out?

The rest of the title scene

United States Champion Logan Paul is set to appear on tonight’s show to witness the final match of the tournament that determines his challenger at the Royal Rumble. Kevin Owens vs. Santos Escobar is the match in question. Will Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits show up to help neutralize the expected interference from Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo?

WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY defends her belt tonight against Mia Yim, who recently pinned the champ in an 8-woman tag team match. This is basically a tune-up match for SKY, because Yim has not been pushed anywhere close to a championship level.

NXT North American Champion Dragon Lee missed New Year’s Evil on Tuesday due to a visa issue, but there’s a chance he’ll be back tonight for New Year’s Revolution.

Other stuff to keep an eye on

- BUTCH and a MYSTERY PARTNER are scheduled to take on Pretty Deadly tonight. Does this mean Sheamus finally returns to SmackDown, or will BUTCH do something completely out of the box?

- Bianca Belair wants to become the WWE women’s champion. Will she directly challenge IYO SKY to a title match at Royal Rumble, or will the EST declare for the Royal Rumble match and try tossing out 29 others wrestlers to earn a title shot at WrestleMania 40?

- It looks like Authors of Pain are about to return to WWE as part of Karrion Kross’ brand new stable. Who will AOP’s first victim be before Karrion’s very shitty booking rubs off on them?

- Jimmy Uso is frustrated about being passed over by Solo Sikoa as the Tribal Heir. Will Jim join the Royal Rumble match and try to win it to prove he should be the next in line?

- Which babyfaces will humiliate Grayson Waller and Austn Theory tonight?

- Where the f*** is Omos?
