Oba Femi made history last night

Not many called Oba Femi’s North American championship win on NXT last night (Jan. 9). Femi has undoubtedly made an impression in his brief time on WWE television, and obviously has company officials excited or they wouldn’t have booked him to win the Breakout Tournament — let alone the title he just that tournament’s prize to claim.

But the 22 year former SEC shot put champion from the University of Alabama (real name Isaac Odugbesan) also made history with his win. Femi was a member of WWE’s first NIL class, signed under a name, image & likeness deal back in 2021 while he was still maintaining his collegiate athletic eligibility. He’s now presumably on a regular developmental wrestler contract, but he’s still the first person from the “Next in Line” program to win WWE gold.
