WWE BACKLASH LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE
Smokeless flame, the common name, less than the angels but more of the same. No paradise, the grateful will lay their claim whether the intentions are violent or just mundane, but me? I’m just here to liveblog this pro wrestling show for you, folks.
The main show kicks off with a video package that’s equal parts tourist video for Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny spotlight, and hype reel for tonight’s matches.
Bianca Belair (c) vs. IYO SKY (WWE Raw Women’s Championship)
Circling, collar and elbow, into the ropes, SKY turns her around, struggling back across the ring, Belair with a wristlock. Reversed, scoop lift but IYO floats out! Headlock takeover from the champion, handspring, knocking SKY down with a shove, off the ropes, handspring over a drop down and IYO does a handspring of her own before taking the champion down!
Backflip up and over sets up a dropkick, Bianca is fired up, scoop and a slam! To the apron, IYO snaps her arm over the top rope, goes up top, pulls Belair in by her braid and applies a Japanese stranglehold hanging in the ropes until referee Jason Ayers warns her off and she hits a double stomp through Bianca’s elbow!
Wrenching her arm in the ropes, kick in the corner, stepping up the arm work, Belair in a bad way, she goes for the Glam Slam but it gets countered into a stomp! Bianca manages to counter her way to a backbreaker but her arm is screaming agony and she can’t capitalize!
Lariats, a dropkick, getting past the pain, vertical suplex connects, kip-up follows! Out of the corner, one arm military press into the slam! Handspring moonsault... NOPE! IYO seemingly going for a lucha arm drag but she just jumps to the floor and snaps Belair’s arm over the ropes!
Dropkick sends the champion out of the ring, back inside, 450 splash... THE KNEES ARE UP AND IYO PUTS HER IN A CROSSFACE! Underhooks, reversed, chickenwings denied, roll away from a double stomp, backbreaker rack, SKY counters with an arm drag that sends Bianca to the floor!
Handspring countered with a knee, IYO heads up top... ORIHARA MOONSAULT! Back inside, shoulder blocks in the corner, jockeying for position in the turnbuckles, Belair knocks her to the floor but she climbs right back up with a Shotei!
Avalanche Frankensteiner blocked, Bianca hosses her up... AVALANCHE LIGER BOMB CAN’T KEEP IYO SKY DOWN! Damage CTRL come down to ringside, Bianca gets IYO up for KOD, knocks Bayley off the apron with her but she reverses, folding press... SO CLOSE!
Bianca distracted by Bayley, Dakota Kai gets a cheap shot in, IYO goes up top... NOBODY HOME ON THE MOONSAULT! BIANCA GETS HER UP...
Bianca Belair wins by pinfall with KOD, retaining the WWE Raw Women’s Championship.
Backstage, Rey Mysterio meets with Bad Bunny and they have a chat.
Savio Vega joins them and presents Bad Bunny with a kendo stick painted with the Puerto Rican flag!
Omos vs. Seth Rollins
Omos knocks Rollins down before the bell but Seth gets right back up!
The bell rings, Rollins runs into a right hand! Fighting back to his feet, the Nigerian Giant whips him hard into the turnbuckles! Omos palms Seth’s face and throws him over the ropes and to the floor! Back in, off the ropes, going for the suicide dives but Omos catches him and slams him into the apron!
Omos presses him over the top rope and back into the ring! Hossing Rollins onto one shoulder, Snake Eyes, a big boot, back up on his shoulder but Seth reverses to a sleeper hold! The giant slings him off, boot up in the corner, slingshot knee staggers Omos!
Leg kicks, cutting the Nigerian Giant to size, duck a lariat, off the ropes, dropkick to the knee gets him down! Basement superkick staggers him, underhooks... PEDIGREE REVERSED TO A BACK BODY DROP! Rollins smashes Omos’ face into the turnbuckles, tornado DDT out of the corner, up top... FROG SPLASH CAN’T FINISH THE JOB!
Seth with punches, he breaks a goozle, up in the turnbuckles, diving elbow to the back of the neck! Blackout blocked, Omos looks up at him with his foot still on his neck and rises before hitting a chokeslam... SO CLOSE! Chokebomb denied, off the ropes, Rollins grabs the sleeper hold again!
Omos breaks it ramming him into the corner but Seth jumps right back on him! Nigerian Giant foaming at the mouth as he buckles down to one knee! He fires up, feet back under him, side slam breaks the hold! Blackout connects... OMOS KICKS OUT OF IT!
Seth goes up top... BLACKOUT OFF THE TOP! IT’S OVER!
Seth Rollins wins by pinfall with an avalanche Blackout.
Post-match, Rollins takes a moment and lets the raucous San Juan crowd serenade him with his theme song.
Austin Theory (c) vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Bronson Reed (WWE United States Championship)
Lashley hot out the gates, taking Reed and Theory out at once! Austin and Bob getting into it, Lashley with a delayed vertical, Reed back in and he and Theory temporarily work together to keep the All Mighty down! Bronson puts Austin in the dirt soon enough!
Bob stalking around the ring, waiting for Theory, he hits the spear... NOPE! He’s got Austin in the Hurt Lock, the champion fades but doesn’t break and he kicks himself up the ropes to counter and break the hold! Reed off the top with the 747 Splash... AUSTIN BREAKS IT UP!
Theory with a blockbuster on Bronson, fireman’s carry but Reed slips out and hits a snap scoop powerslam on him! Bronson goes for a moonsault, nobody home, Lashley spears him, Theory throws Bob out of the ring...
Austin Theory wins by pinfall with a lateral press on Bronson Reed to retain the WWE United States Championship.
Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Zelina Vega (WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship)
Circling, Vega keeping her distance, ducking to the apron when Ripley closes and laying a shoulder in! She goes to the floor and gets a sandal from her mom at ringside and throws it at Rhea! Headed up top, diving Frankensteiner caught and reversed into a powerbomb... NOPE!
Ripley gets her in the Gory Special, wrenching her neck, Zelina gets out, rallies with a couple lariats but Rhea clocks her with a headbutt! Cobra Twist reversed into a DDT! Vega has her chance, Ripley in the ropes, she calls for it... TIGER FEINT KICK!
Zelina up top, a little shimmuy, Meteora... RHEA RIPLEY KICKS OUT! A kick from the apron, pumphandle...
Rhea Ripley wins by pinfall with Riptide, retaining the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Post-match, Zelina Vega takes a moment to soak in the adulation of her people.
Bad Bunny vs. Damian Priest (San Juan Street Fight)
Electric standoff, Priest shoves him down but Bunny pops right back up and gets in his face! Damian rams him into the corner harder and slaps his cheek disdainfully, so Bad hauls off and slaps him full-force across the face! Scoop and a slam, cover... ONLY ONE!
Bunny goes to the floor and gets a kendo stick out of a shopping cart full of plunder and slides back in, waiting for Priest! Rammed into the corner, a single body blow crumbles him! Damian breaks the kendo stick over his knee, scoop and a slam, following it with a wristlock and wrenching Bad around!
Bad Bunny with a thumb to the eye for a breather, a jawbreaker follows, mounted punches in the corner get cut off but he gets Priest down for a sunset flip nearfall! Damian catches a punch and boxes his ears, knocking him down in the corner!
Corner elbow, goozle, South of Heaven... PRIEST PULLS UP OUT OF THE PIN! Bunny to the floor, Damian goes after him and Bad throws a chair at his face before lighting him up with a kendo stick! Tornado DDT out of the corner, clothesline sends Priest to the floor!
Big crossbody to the floor from Bunny, both men needing a moment to recover and Bad wails on him with trash can lids, boxing his ears with them! Kendo stick in hand, back inside, whacking Damian in the ribs, he catches the stick eventually and slings Bunny into the corner but Bad is right back on him and boxes his ears!
BAD BUNNY FALCON ARROW FOR TWO! Priest to the floor, checking his nose for blood... BAD BUNNY MADE THE PUNISHMENT BLEED! Damian waves him off and decides to leave, but Bunny charges after him with a trash can only to get it booted into his face!
Walloping Bad with the trash can, throwing him into and over the barricade and into the timekeeper’s area, fighting on some equipment... BROKEN ARROW OFF THE ROAD CASES AND THROUGH A TABLE! Road agents and referees swarm, Damian Priest won’t let Adam Pearce or Shane Helms end it and he carries Bunny back to ringside!
Damian hits the reverse roundhouse but Bunny ducks and he kicks post! Getting a kendo stick from under the ring, he wallops Priest in the knee with it a few times before getting decked and dropping to the mat! Bad pulls himself up in the corner, charges in, grabs a boot... SHOULDER KNEEBREAKER!
Smashing Priest’s knees into the post, Bunny gets a length of chain and whips his leg with it before wrapping it around his angle and smashing it into the post again over Damian’s pleading efforts to beg off! Steel chair in hand, he hits Priest and sends him scurrying, stumbling, knee giving out!
Back inside, chair in hand, referee Eddie Orengo checking on Damian! Priest begs off, pleading with Bad Bunny to back off and he hesitates long enough for Damian to kick him from the mat! Hopping on one leg, Priest grabs a chair and Bad uppercuts him in the gentleman’s area!
That brings Dominik Mysterio and Finn Balor down to even the odds and put boots to the Bunny! Rey Mysterio is here but he gets overwhelmed by the Judgment Day boys! OH SHIT CARLITO IS HERE IN A LATINO WORLD ORDER SHIRT BABY! HOUSE OF FIRE WITH PUNCHES AND HE SETS REY UP FOR A SATELLITE TIJERAS BEFORE HITTING THE BACKSTABBER!
Carlito bites the apple, Dominik attacks him from behind, whip across, 619 connects and Carlito spits the apple in Mysterio the Younger’s face! Finn and Dom run away up the ramp... SAVIO VEGA CUTS OFF THEIR RETREAT AND HE’S GOT THE REST OF THE LATINO WORLD ORDER WITH HIM!
Back inside, Bunny puts the figure four leglock on Priest in the middle of the ring! Bridging for more pressure, he gets a nearfall off of it, South of Heaven reversed into a victory roll pin for two! He puts Priest face-first into a chair, Shiranui... DAMIAN KICKS OUT!
Bad Bunny unloading with chair shots, just devastating Damian Priest, front kick... BAD BUNNY FLIP PILEDRIVER... IT’S OVER!
Bad Bunny wins by pinfall with a flip piledriver.
Post-match, the Latino World Order return to the ring to celebrate with Bad Bunny.
We get a hype reel for Night of Champions.
Kevin Owens, Matt Riddle, & Sami Zayn vs. the Bloodline (Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, & Solo Sikoa)
Jey to start with Sami, side headlock, shot off, shoulder block and the Bloodline taunt. Side headlock, grinding Zayn down, shot off, drop down, lariat, Uso rolls to his corner and Jimmy tags in. Owens tags in, front kick into punches, lighting Uso up with kicks in the corner!
Trading punches, whip across, big elbow, big senton, tag to Riddle! Punches in the corner, up and over, kick to the ribs, Karelin lift connects! Zayn legal, smashing Jimmy into the turnbuckles, Uso runs away and tags Sikoa in! Punches and headbutts in the corner, wearing Sami down!
Quick tags, working Zayn over, the match breaks down at one point but the Bloodline maintain control! Eventually Riddle gets the hot tag, fighting both Usos off at once, ripcord knee for Jey, charging forearms for both of them! Out and back in, Uso cuts him down with a superkick... NOPE!
Both men down, Kevin Owens tags in, senton atomico... SO CLOSE! Superkick, off the ropes, blind tag to Jey, KO ducks and Jimmy takes his own brother out with a superkick! More superkicks, off the ropes, pop-up powerbomb... NOT ENOUGH!
Another senton atomico, the knees are up! Stunner blocked, trading superkicks, big lariat from KO! Sami tags in, Blue Thunder Driver for two, headed up top. enzuigiri cuts him off, Usos with a tag, both up in the corner jockeying for position, Sami knocks them down and gets cut out of midair with stereo superkicks... STILL NO!
Zayn down and out in the corner, Jey jawing at him, throwing his 1 up, calling for it but Sikoa tags in on him! Arguing in the corner, Uso tags back in, Sami hits the Helluva Kick on Solo, exploder suplex... SOLO SIKOA BREAKS UP THE PIN!
Riddle in with a knee, the match breaks down into “everybody do something cool” business, Solo almost hits Jey with the Samoan Spike! Brothers arguing, Sami clobbers Sikoa but Uso rolls him up for two! Superkick connects, Jey goes up top, diving splash, the knees are up, small package for a nearfall!
Superkick sends Zayn into a tag to Riddle, strike rush gets a superkick gets a knee, Solo with the blind tag, Matt hits the fall-forward Tombstone piledriver but Sikoa hits the spike...
The Bloodline win by pinfall with the Samoan Spike from Solo Sikoa on Matt Riddle.
Post-match, the Bloodline awkwardly stand together in victory.
We get an Imperium hype reel.
Brock Lesnar vs. “American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes
Rhodes jumps Lesnar before the bell and beats him down with the announce desk cover! Smashing Brock with the steel steps three times, Cody goes under the ring for a steel chair and wallops Lesnar with that a few times too! Back inside, referee Rod Zapata takes the chair and calls for the bell!
Rhodes in the corner with forearms, Brock picks him up and stampedes him into the corner! Drop down slap, Cody follows it with Beautiful Disaster, keeping his head of steam going with another springboard kick! A third gets him caught... BROCK GETS THE GERMAN SUPLEX!
Red-faced, panting, a string of spit dangling from his mouth, Lesnar gets himself back together as Cody rolls to the floor. Hanging Brock’s neck over the top rope, probing strikes, Rhodes goes up top, diving crossbody caught into a fallaway slam!
Stalking after Cody, another German suplex connects, the Beast smiling as he draws Rhodes up for a third German suplex and lets a primal roar loose! Kicking the American Nightmare’s ribs, aggravating the injury inflicted by his post-WrestleMania beatdown before hitting a fourth German suplex!
More kicks to the ribs, Cody struggling and Brock hosses him over with a pair of snap suplexes! Rhodes pulls a turnbuckle pad off as he eats German suplex number five and Lesnar turns to see the exposed turnbuckle ring! Bear hug applied, I can hardly bear it!
Cody throws some elbows and Brock throws him with a belly-to-belly suplex! Shoulder thrusts in the corner, Rhodes ducks one and Lesnar goes into the turnbuckle! Ace Crusher connects, Cody’s fired up! Beautiful Disaster connects, punching Brock’s bloodied face again and again, kicking him and smearing the blood down his belly!
Springboard... CODY CUTTER CONNECTS! Stalking the Beast, inverted headlock... CROSS RHODES! AND AGAIN! Brock gets under him... F-5 CAN’T KEEP THE GRANDSON OF A PLUMBER DOWN! On their knees, Cody with punches and Lesnar goes for the Kimura Lock!
Rhodes hanging in there, he manages to roll Brock into a pin...
Cody Rhodes wins by pinfall, reversing a Kimura Lock into a sort of folding press.
Cody leaves in victory while Brock cleans himself up with a towel.
