Deadline 2023 results: Ilja Dragunov hugs, pins Baron Corbin to retain NXT championship

Trick Williams pulling off one hell of an upset en route to booking his ticket to an NXT championship match may have been the big story of the Deadline premium live event tonight (Sat., Dec. 9, 2023) in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but it was not the main event of the evening. No, that went to Ilja Dragunov defending the aforementioned NXT championship against Baron Corbin.

Yes, that would be the same Baron Corbin who spent so much time at or near the top of the card on the main roster but never quite broke through as a champion. He came back to NXT hoping to reinvent himself — or even just find himself — and finally score some gold. Dragunov, the absolute mad lad, represented the final obstacle.

It was an obstacle too tall to climb.

In the end, Dragunov gave him three H-bombs and a Torpedo Moscow to score the pinfall to retain his title. Before the final blow, he stopped to give Corbin a hug, not unlike he did on NXT television in the week leading up to this.

They. moved on right away too, with Trick Williams making his entrance to stand in the aisle and remind everyone he’s coming for the title.

And Carmelo Hayes was trailing just behind him as the show faded to black.
