When CM Punk was fired by AEW in early September, there was a lot of uncertainty about his future in pro wrestling, because it looked like Punk may have burned his bridges to the top two wrestling companies in the USA. But if you listen to NXT head honcho Shawn Michaels, there was never any doubt about WWE’s decision to do business with CM again.
On a call with the media today ahead of this weekend’s NXT Deadline premium live event, HBK said WWE’s decision to sign Punk was such an obvious call to make that he doesn’t even think it needs to be explained:
“We all sort of sat under the same learning tree here. Business is first, it’s just that simple. For me, I don’t think it was a tough decision for anybody...because it was a good business move. I’m happy that it got done.
...I wish him luck. I wish the company luck. I’m very excited about it. Obviously, the WWE Universe is very excited about it, as they should be. I have no doubt there are big things going forward, and it’s a great time to be a fan...it’s a win-win for everybody. And to me, when it’s like that, it’s a no-brainer, man. I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it or even feeling like we need to explain it.
Everybody enjoy this, and let’s just have a good time in the wrestling business. I think that’s just the way it should go.”
Just like in real sports, it seems that locker room chemistry (to the extent that it even exists) just doesn’t matter that much when it comes to major decisions at this level. CM Punk is a huge star in the wrestling business, and stars of that caliber often get multiple chances, even if they are often associated with a bunch of drama or negative attention.
Punk is just getting started during his latest WWE run, and HBK is right that it’s definitely an exciting time to be a fan.
