After wrestling his first match in WWE in almost a decade last Tuesday, CM Punk returned to the ring at a live event in Los Angeles to take on Dominik Mysterio in a rematch of their post-Christmas encounter. Once more, Punk received a monstrous ovation as he basked in the warm glow of that California love.
Unlike their previous meeting at New York’s Madison Square, Mysterio showed up without Rhea Ripley or Judgment Day to face the straight edge superstar. However, Mysterio — a SoCal resident from San Diego — wasn’t completely alone. In a slight turn of events, there were duel chants of “CM Punk” and “Let’s Go, Dom.”
Yes. For a change, a portion of the audience chanted for wrestling’s most hated man as he got the early advantage with cheap shots in the corner. Mysterio rewarded his supporters by dropping a double biceps pose for his Little Dominoes.
But the good times didn’t last long for the Dirty One as Punk turned the tables on Mysterio, stooping to questionable tactics to gain the upper hand. Then, in preparation for the Royal Rumble, Punk dumped the former NXT North American Champion over the top rope.
Entering the final stretch, Mysterio blasted Punk with a 6-1-9, which led to a false finish. After a series of reversals, Mysterio attempted a sunset flip from the apron into the ring. Instead, Punk perfectly timed the move and caught Mysterio on his shoulders, which allowed him to deliver the Go To Sleep to pick up the victory.
Following the match, Punk expressed his appreciation to the fans at the Kia Forum as he did to those in New York. He once again promised to win the Royal Rumble and finish his story at WrestleMania XL while extending his apologies to Cody Rhodes, who’s looking to do the same next April.
Who do you think will finish their story, Cagesiders? Will it be CM Punk or Cody Rhodes? Or will someone else step in and win the Royal Rumble?
