Amidst the whirlwind of events happening in WWE, one might expect the USA Network’s website, specifically its entertainment hub, USA Insider, to be buzzing with topics about the here and now.
Instead, it chose to do a puff piece on Randy Orton.
Titled From “Legend Killer” to Legend: A Look at the WWE Career of Randy Orton, the article is essentially a Cliffs Notes guide to Orton, covering his entry into WWE and career highlights.
Where it gets interesting is in the heading that asks, “When Was Randy Orton’s Last WWE Match?”
“The WWE Universe last saw Randy Orton compete in the ring in May 2022, when he and Matt Riddle failed to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships. It was a pivotal moment in the vaunted Bloodline storyline that is still going strong today. Unfortunately, fans haven’t seen Randy Orton appear on WWE television for over a year, and there’s no update on a possible return for the 14-time WWE Champion.”
The feature then concludes with this hopeful line:
“Despite conventional wisdom suggesting Randy Orton’s career is nearing a close (or could already be wrapped up), we hope Orton will resurface soon. After all, there are still many more RKOs to deliver in 2023!”
A recent rumor suggested that new merchandise and branding were approved for Orton, along with a “large social media promotion” for his return to WWE, which was said to be happening on the weekend of Survivor Series.
Is this USA Insider piece the first promotion for said return, or was it simply a warm and fuzzy piece about a not-so-warm and fuzzy superstar?
