WWE SMACKDOWN RESULTS AND LIVE BLOG FOR JAN. 7
Solar winds are blowing, neutron star controlling. All is lost, doomed and tossed, at what cost forever? Meteors fly around me, comets die, and then I liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.
The show opens with a recap of Brock Lesnar’s title win and appearance on Raw with Paul Heyman.
Roman Reigns makes his entrance and gets on the mic.
He tells New England to acknowledge him and says this is the week it all fell apart, but when you’re in isolation you do a lot of thinking, and there’s so many things he wanted to do and say and people that he wanted to see, except for two people that he never wants to see again.
Those two people are Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman.
Enter Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman.
Brock takes the mic from Paul and gets in Roman’s face. He does his best Heyman impression and introduces himself as the reigning, defending WWE Champion and demands Roman acknowledge him. He says Reigns has a lot to say all the time and he doesn’t, because last Saturday they both got what they wanted and now he wants to give everybody what they want.
Title vs. title, champion vs. champion. Roman says he does things on his time, and he doesn’t do business with people who do business with trash like Paul Heyman. Paul sputters and asks how he can talk to him that way, and asks how he got his title match in the first place and how he kept it, saying he protected Reigns from Brock not because he thought Lesnar would win, but because he was his tribal chief and he loved him and—
Brock cuts him off and Paul, practically weeping, talks about how Brock left and Roman was all he had. Lesnar tells him to shut up, Roman tells him not to talk to Paul like that, Heyman asks Brock not to talk to Reigns like that, and the Big Dog hits the Superman Punch on Lesnar!
We see Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs hanging out backstage to send us to break.
Back from commercial, we get a recap of what we just saw.
Sami Zayn is interviewed backstage.
He says it’s been over a year since he was robbed of his Intercontinental Championship and now Shinsuke Nakamura is ducking him and putting a gorilla with a guitar in his way? He’s no match for the master strategist, and tonight... Sami gets distracted and wanders over to Johnny Knoxville.
Johnny is here to talk to management about his campaign to get in the Royal Rumble. Sami says this isn’t Jackass and you need technical wrestling skills, but Knoxville rebuts and says you don’t need technical wrestling to dump somebody over the ropes to eliminate them.
Zayn says he’s unqualified and hasn’t shown a veteran like Sami that he’s got what it takes, and he’d be best off just leaving.
Rick Boogs vs. Sami Zayn
Boogs backs Zayn into the corner, Sami hides in the ropes but Rick hits an exploder suplex on him! Following it up with another, military press, lifting him up before hitting the press slam! Zayn rolls to the floor, Boogs fired up and we go to break.
Back from commercial, Boogs with a tossing Karelin lift, Zayn off the top and he gets caught in the bear hug! I CAN HARDLY BEAR IT! Shifting to a delayed vertical, Sami manages to shift enough to force him to a knee but Rick stands back up and completes it!
Zayn runs away, Rick throws him back in, Sami cuts him off and gets in Shinsuke Nakamura’s face before returning to the ring, Boogs catches him...
Rick Boogs wins by pinfall with a small package.
Post-match, Sami is distracted jawing at Shinsuke and Rick when Johnny Knoxville comes up behind him and shoves him over the top rope!
We’re told that Johnny has officially qualified for the Royal Rumble!
Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston are interviewed backstage.
Xavier points out that a street fight means no rules and he expects nothing less from those barnacle boys the Usos.
Charlotte Flair makes her entrance, she’ll be hosting A Flair for the Dramatic, after the break.
Back from commercial, Charlotte Flair gets on the mic.
She talks aobut how the Royal Rumble changes lives and offers a video breakdown of the women in the Royal Rumble this year, including surprises the Bella Twins, Michelle McCool, current Impact Knockouts Champion Mickie James(!!), Kelly Kelly, Summer Rae(!) and Lita!
Charlotte says she has the great pleasure of announcing someone very special for this year’s Royal Rumble, a game changer, a living legend, a former Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion, and someone we all admire... HERSELF!
She says Charlotte doesn’t have to wait to WrestleMania to face a challenger of her choosing, because she can choose to face her and put her title on the line right now. Flair mocks her, Naomi hauls off and slaps her and sends her packing to the floor!
And so we go to break.
Charlotte Flair vs. Naomi
Match joined in progress, no idea if it’s for the title or not but Flair is in control taking it to Naomi. Corner to corner, Naomi blocks and puts Charlotte into the turnbuckles! Whip reversed, up and over, mule kick, sliding lariat for two! Snapmare into a knee to the back, Flair puts the figure four headscissors on and smashes Naomi’s face into the mat!
Drawing her up, whip reversed, inverted stomp facebreaker, corner bulldog, Naomi goes up top to follow it up but Charlotte boots her down to the floor! Action to the floor, Naomi with a roundhouse kick and then a blockbuster off the barricade! Referee Ryan Tran counts, but Sonya Deville comes down and declares the match no-countout!
Flair blindsides Naomi and stands tall as we go to break.
Back from commercial, Charlotte is in control and it’s clear now that the title is not on the line. Standing neck crank from Flair, jawbreaker to get away, boots up, enzuigiri, Naomi with a crossbody, leg drop, only two! Naomi up top, diving crossbody connects... NOPE!
Charlotte staggered, slow to rise, Rear View countered into a schoolboy pin for two! Figure four leglock applied in the middle of the ring, bridging up but Naomi struggles to the ropes to force the break! Of course Sonya Deville gets on the mic and announces that there’s no disqualifications either, pinfalls or submission only.
Naomi counters a kick, slingshot sunset flip blocked, Flair with stomps, moonsault attempt, nobody home, standing moonsault connects but Naomi kicks out! Crucifix pin, only two, Naomi sidesteps a boot, forearms, boots connect from both women and they’re down and out!
Naomi slips out of a back suplex, hits a full nelson mat slam, only two! Flair with an STO backbreaker out of the corner, cover for two, powerbomb lift, Naomi counters with an X-Factor! Cover gets two, dragging her into position, split-legged moonsault blocked and Flair puts her into the post!
Backdrop Driver, setting her up...
Charlotte Flair wins by pinfall with Natural Selection.
Post-match, Sonya Deville announces Naomi as the loser.
The Usos are interviewed backstage.
They say the New Day had their chance and lost because they borrowed the 3D from the Dudley Boyz, and tonight they’re gonna find out when they call the Usos the ones.
Happy Corbin makes his entrance to send us to break.
Back from commercial, we get a recap of our opening segment.
Sonya Deville and Adam Pearce are chatting backstage. Pearce says he’s been on the phone all night trying to find a Royal Rumble opponent for Roman Reigns, and as it stands, he gets to pick who he wants, and he’s gonna pick someone tonight, and he wants to bounce ideas off her, so they go walking and talking.
Happy Corbin is in the ring for Happy Talk and he thanks everyone for coming out.
He points out that he’s here alone tonight, and with COVID you have to watch your back. Drew McIntyre failed to watch his back, and he rolls footage from Day 1 of what happened. He says it makes him incredibly happy and it was worth the fine, and despite expecting that Drew McIntyre would be out for months and months, turns out he’s here tonight.
He puts Drew over with a big introduction... and out comes Madcap Moss in a neck brace and a kilt with a cane and a flaccid inflatable sword. He hobbles his way into the ring and needs Corbin to help him sit. Happy does a mock interview, and of course Moss makes fun of haggis.
“Drew” says Happy would murder him and make him soil his kilt, and he’s never going to compete again and use this injury as an excuse to pursue his passions, painting watercolors and writing poetry about the Loch Ness Monster. At this he corpses and “reveals” that he was Madcap Moss all along and fooled us all.
Enter the Viking Raiders to send us to break.
Happy Corbin & Madcap Moss vs. Viking Raiders (Erik & Ivar)
Back from commercial, match in progress, Ivar cartwheels away from a Corbin big boot and tags Erik in! Shotgun knees, slamming Warbeard into Happy, but the heels turn the tide shortly thereafter and work Erik over. Moss with a big fallaway slam, tag to Corbin and the heat segment rolls on!
Erik knocks Madcap to the floor and lays him out with a big knee and the path is clear but Corbin pulls Ivar off the apron and posts him! Moss with a shoulder thrust, neckbreaker clutch...
Happy Corbin & Madcap Moss win by pinfall with the neckbreaker driver from Moss on Erik, which we’re informed he calls Punchline now.
We get a medical update on Drew McIntyre, who’s waiting for a meeting with a specialist on Monday.
Sheamus cuts a promo mocking Drew for being home hurt and says he only cares about his protege Ridge Holland, whose nose is sticking out the back of his head. He can’t help but feel a little responsible, but he knows what will cheer Ridge up— he’s entering the Royal Rumble.
New Day make their entrance to send us to break.
Back from commercial, Roman Reigns is in his office and bids someone to come in.
Adam Pearce enters and tells him he’s chosen his next opponent. Reigns scoffs and says unless it’s Pearce himself, he doesn’t care, because he can smash anyone on this roster, and says he wants to watch his cousins’ match now and tells Adam to leave.
New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. the Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) (c) (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship Street Fight)
Kingston and Jimmy to start, snapmare, quick tag to Woods and they double team Uso but can’t keep him down. Kofi with a Coffin Drop to the floor to take the Usos out and we go to break.
Back from commercial, the two teams have remembered that it’s a street fight and are brawling up on the stage. The Usos take them back to ringside and Woods hits a tornado DDT on Jey... NOPE! Roman is shown watching backstage as the Usos turn the tide and Jey goes under the ring for plunder.
They get out some duct tape and tape Xavier Woods to the top rope! Kofi still manages a nearfall off an inverted suplex, and takes the tape off his partner! Low bridges send the Usos to the floor but they throw Woods into the crowd and then run Kofi over with the steel steps!
Taking the stairs out to Xavier, they smash him with them, too! The Usos pose on the barricade before going back to beat Kingston up some more. Woods takes them out and we go to break.
Back from commercial, Jimmy and Kofi up top and jockeying for position, Xavier with the electric chair... CROSSBODY DOOMSDAY DEVICE! Woods gets a breastplate and a helmet out from under the ring and puts on the helmet, Kofi whacks Jimmy with the breastplate and the helmet lets Woods shrug off a superkick!
They throw the armor at the Usos, stereo superkicks into stereo pins... NO GOOD! The crowd wants tables and Xavier obliges them, pulling one out and sliding it in the ring! Woods blocks Jimmy from putting him into the table but gets taken out with a superkick, Jey takes Kingston out with a superkick of his own and the Usos regroup!
Kofi manages to get up and hit Trouble in Paradise... JIMMY USO BREAKS IT UP! Xavier goes up top, Jey cuts him off and gets his brother up, superkicks connect, two for Kingston as well... SUPERKICK PARTY! The Usos set the table up in the middle of the ring... 3D THROUGH THE TABLE! IT’S OVER!
The Usos win by pinfall with the 1D on Kofi Kingston, retaining the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
We go back to Roman Reigns in his office with someone knocking.
He bids them enter and a sour look plays across his face as he gets up to meet them. It’s Seth Rollins!
Rollins laughs and laughs and laughs.
That’s the show, folks.
