The Fri., Sept. 3 edition of SmackDown already a Universal title match, but that was all WWE announced in advance for the show from VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. This afternoon, they’ve added two more matches to the card.
When Cesaro and Seth Rollins faced off at WrestleMania 37, the Swiss Superman was himself being built up for a shot at Universal champion Roman Reigns. Since then, Cesaro had drifted on the blue brand. Tonight it looks like he’ll be used to advance the story of Rollins’ evolution after losing to a Brood-inspired Edge at SummerSlam.
In addition that, Street Profits will get a chance to face The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team championship when they face The Usos in non-title action. These “beat the champ, get a title shot” matches are an old staple, but lately WWE’s taken to calling them “Championship Contenders Matches”.
We’ll see if Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins can earn a “championship opportunity”, if Cesaro has Seth’s number, and whether Finn Bálor can take the Universal strap from The Head of the Table on SmackDown at 8pm ET. Join us in our live blog and we can all find out together!
