The next pay-per-view (PPV) on the WWE schedule is the SummerSlam show set to take place on Sat., Aug. 21, 2021. For the first time since 1992, the show will be held in a football stadium. In this case, it’s where the Raiders make their home at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
We’re two weeks out from showtime, and the card is filling out quite nicely:
- Roman Reigns (c) vs. John Cena (Universal championship)
Once Cena returned at Money in the Bank right after Reigns retained his title, it was clear we were headed for this. A slight detour teasing Finn Balor getting the spot ended when Cena sneakily signed his own name on the contract and made this official. Pro wrestling!
- Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Goldberg (WWE championship)
The way it seems to work for Goldberg is he simply shows up when he wants, says “I’m next” to whomever he wants to wrestle, and he gets the match. That’s what happened here too.
- Bianca Belair (c) vs. Sasha Banks (SmackDown women’s championship)
Banks lost the title to Belair at WrestleMania 37 before taking a few months off. As soon as she returned, she set up a rematch for this show.
- Nikki A.S.H. (c) vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley (Raw women’s championship)
Flair and Ripley were feuding over the title, with Flair defeating Ripley for it at Money in the Bank and Nikki cashing in the Money in the Bank contract the next night.
- The Usos (c) vs. The Mysterios (SmackDown tag team championship)
This will be a rematch from Money in the Bank, where The Usos won the titles from Rey & Dominik.
- Edge vs. Seth Rollins
They got this kicked off with Rollins costing Edge the Universal championship and have since given it depth by bringing up a 2014 segment on Raw, and fleshing out the story.
There are programs that have been in the works that haven’t been announced for the show, but it’s unclear just how many matches will run that night. Rumors indicated WWE wanted the show done in time for the Manny Pacquiao fight and we’re already six matches in. Other programs ongoing but unannounced: Sheamus vs. Damian Priest (U.S. title), Apollo Crews vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (Intercontinental title), AJ Styles & Omos vs. RK-Bro (Raw tag team championship), and Drew McIntyre vs. Jinder Mahal.
