Reports started getting out within the past couple of weeks that WWE had changed its strategy with NXT, a fact that seemed evident by recent releases from the brand. Internally, this seemed to indicate a number of issues and word got around about Triple H being blamed for failures of the third brand to successfully compete with AEW.
Whether that’s fair or not, we are where we are. For what it’s worth, Triple H didn’t do a conference call with media ahead of tonight’s (Sun., Aug. 22, 2021) NXT TakeOver 36 event as he would normally do. For all we know, he may not be doing them again.
We’ll likely know more on what the future holds within the next couple of weeks. That’s because WWE President Nick Khan confirmed to Ariel Helwani in an interview today that an NXT rebrand is coming, and it will be here soon:
“In terms of an NXT rebrand, look for it in the next couple of weeks. It’s going to have a whole new look. It’s going to have a whole new feel, and we believe because a lot of the ‘indie wrestlers,’ if you will, have come through our system and are in our system with SmackDown and Raw now, we don’t want to just keep doing that same thing, we want to look elsewhere for great young talent.”
TakeOver 36 appears to be the end of the NXT we’ve known and loved for the past few years. We’ll see what the future looks like soon enough.
