Arguably the best story going into tonight’s (Sat., Aug. 21, 2021) WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view (PPV) from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, featured Edge, utterly pissed about how he was costed the Universal championship, taking on Seth Rollins, the smarmy little son of a gun who did the costing.
They took it much deeper than that, though, with Edge getting into Rollins’ head by referring to him as “Edge-lite” while also slipping deep back into his dark ways. To that end, we got a really cool throwback Brood entrance (see it here). They got personal, and it should have led to a match that matched the intensity of the build to it.
They were slow to start in that regard. It felt formula for much of the beginning, but they turned up the heat as they went along. They gave us some very good spots along the way — Edge speared Rollins off the apron to the mat outside, Rollins countered a later spear attempt in the ring with a Pedigree, Edge brought back the Edgecator; it was a fun match.
The finish is where it really connected the story — Edge, with Rollins in a crossface, repeatedly slammed his face into the mat, ripped him back, and choked him until he tapped. And tap he did.
