The next pay-per-view (PPV) on the WWE schedule is the SummerSlam show set to take place on Sat., Aug. 21, 2021. For the first time since 1992, the show will be held in a football stadium. In this case, it’s where the Raiders make their home at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
We’re three weeks out from showtime, and two matches are official for the event:
- Roman Reigns (c) vs. John Cena (Universal championship)
For some reason, WWE felt it necessary to play it like Reigns would actually be defending against Finn Balor but at the last second Baron Corbin ran in, beat up Finn, tried to sign the contract in his place, and was then beaten up by Cena, who stole and signed the contract himself. It felt like a goofy and unnecessary way to get to a big money match, but at least we’re getting to it.
- Nikki A.S.H. (c) vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley (Raw women’s championship)
Flair won the title from Ripley at Money in the Bank, and Nikki won the title from Flair the next night on Raw. That gave both Flair and Ripley a decent case to be awarded the next shot and Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville decided the best way to settle it would be in the ring.
That’s all that is official so far but Bobby Lashley defending the WWE championship against Goldberg is clearly planned, Sasha Banks just returned and attacked Bianca Belair to set up another showdown for the SmackDown women’s championship, and Edge and Seth Rollins are at each other’s throats over who should be wrestling for the Universal championship.
