Edge and Seth Rollins have been inching towards this for a long time but it’s just now getting fully fleshed out as an actual story.
Indeed, Edge showed up on Friday Night SmackDown this week to cut a promo on Rollins, one that included a great many threats of violence backed up by his personal history of learning from some truly evil folks. What was most interesting, though, was his callback to a 2014 segment where Rollins had his foot on Edge’s neck and was threatening to take him out if John Cena didn’t reinstate The Authority.
He got what he wanted and then tried to take him out anyway but Cena rushed in to save the day.
The reason it went down that way, of course, is because Edge wasn’t cleared for any kind of legitimate physicality. Which is why it works so well that he brings this up today.
Because now he is cleared, and that, combined with Rollins costing him the Universal championship, is enough to bring out all that violence.
For his part, Rollins promised to finish the job this time. They didn’t make it official for SummerSlam next month in Las Vegas just yet but it’s clear we’re headed for that.
