NXT announced their second ever Breakout Tournament this past Tuesday night. It won’t start until July 13, but they’re laying the groundwork for it on 205 Live starting tonight (July 2).
As they did with the men’s and women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic Tag Team Tournaments earlier this year, WWE is adding qualifying matches to the cruiserweight show - and hopes to get some more fans to pay attention to the purple brand in the process.
The first two qualifiers will feature two recent signees working their first televised matches for the company. Both joined the company through the EVOLVE pipeline.
Harlem Bravado, now wrestling as Andre Chase, debuts in one qualifier. He’ll face Guru Raaj, who faced Finn Bálor on the Superstar Spectacle special back in January. In the other, Eddie Kingston’s old tag partner Joe Gacy gets to keep his name. Gacy’s first WWE match will be against Desmond Troy. Troy is a former All-American collegiate wrestler who’s been in the system since 2018. Under his real name Denzel Dejournette, he’s appeared on NXT, Raw, SmackDown & Main Event several times already.
We’ll see who advances to compete in the eight-man Breakout Tournament. Whoever does could have a decent chance at regular WWE television time in the future. the inaugural 2019 edition featured guys like Cameron Grimes, Bronson Reed, Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Dexter Lumis, Joaquin Wilde, Angel Garza, and Boa - all of whom are or have been featured on TV since.
Interested enough to tune in to 205 Live tonight at 10 pm ET on Peacock?
