WWE SmackDown results, live blog (July 16, 2021): Back on the road

WWE SmackDown comes waltzing back into our lives tonight (July 16, 2021) with a show from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. This is the go-home show for the Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) scheduled for July 18 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Tonight’s main event is a 6 man tag team match. Edge teams up with Rey and Dominik Mysterio to battle Roman Reigns and The Usos.

Also on the card we’ll see Bianca Belair defend the SmackDown women’s championship against Carmella. Finally, WWE is advertising a Fatal 4-Way match between the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match participants - Big E, Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Seth Rollins.

This is WWE’s first show back on the road after the end of the ThunderDome era, with live fans finally returning to witness all the action. WWE is bound to have a surprise or two planned during the course of the evening, as well as a new set design.

Come right back here at 8 pm ET when the SmackDown live blog kicks off once the show starts on FOX. It will be below this line here. (REMINDER: NO GIFS OR PICS ARE ALLOWED IN THE COMMENTS SECTION. OFFENDERS WILL BE BANNED.)

Can’t make out things they said, spent too many nights getting out of my head. They must be mad, must be blind, driving me crazy right out of my mind. But hey, I’ve got to liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you all the same, folks.

The show opens with a big video package hyping up tonight’s return to touring in front of live crowds.

Vincent Kennedy McMahon makes his entrance.

He asks the crowd where the hell they’ve been and immediately turns around and leaves.

We get entrances for our opening match and go to break.

Edge & the Mysterios (Dominik & Rey Mysterio) vs. the Bloodline (Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, & Roman Reigns)

Jey with a cheap shot on Edge to start, he gets flapjacked in return and the babyfaces start making tags and keeping Uso isolated. Dominik proves to be the weak link, Jey goes striking with him and Jimmy tags in! Usos cut Mysterio off, working him over, Reigns cold yanking him out of the ring to prolong the beatdown!

Roman bouncing Dom into the table, breaking the count, just tearing the poor kid apart as he powerbombs him into the announce table to send us to break!

Back from commercial, Jimmy and Dominik down and out, tags made to Edge and Jey Uso! Rated-R Superstar running hot, taking it to all three heels, tag to Rey, DDT for a nearfall! The match breaking down, Dom takes an Uso out, Roman takes him out, papa eats a right but snaps off a Frankensteiner that puts Jey on the second rope, but Reigns blocks the 619 and spinebusters him into the apron!

The Bloodline win by pinfall with a schoolboy and a handful of tights from Jey Uso on Rey Mysterio.

Post-match the Usos beat the tag champs down but Edge makes the save with a chair! Reigns takes him out with a Superman Punch! Roman has Edge where he wants him and grabs the chair, stomping the support out of it... BUT EDGE RECOVERS AND SPEARS HIM! HE PUTS ROMAN BACK IN THE ASSISTED CROSSFACE!

Commentary recaps what we just saw and hypes up the rest of tonight’s card before sending us to break.

Back from commercial, Edge and the Mysterios are walking backstage and doing a post-mortem on their match when an interview rolls up for Edge.

Edge says he wishes he could say that making Roman tap like a bitch would make his title match Sunday easy, but it won’t, and he has to beat Roman at his own game.

Seth Rollins rolls up and says he sincerely hopes Edge wins the title because he’d love to cash in on the man that made the match famous and follow up on his threats from all those years ago when Edge was still retired.

Sami Zayn makes his entrance.

He gets on the mic and complains of the conspiracy against him but says tonight he has the fans in his corner and we’ve seen it all. He tries to start a chant for himself before deciding the hee-haws of Texas aren’t on his size, and what he needs is justice. If there was any justice in the world he’d be in Money in the Bank, or they’d give him the contract outright.

Sami attempts to welcome him up but he gets dropped with the inverted facelock elbow drop! Shotgun dropkick, up top... COUP DE GRACE!

We get a recap of Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox beating Natalya and Tamina last week.

Shotzi and Tegan make their entrance and send us to break.

Alpha Academy cut a promo backstage.

Chad Gable speaks of the importance of using all five senses, seeing grown men ducking, feeling the tension, hearing them whisper “Otis” in awe, and he can already taste Cesaro’s victory. And what is the smell? The smell of fear.

Cesaro rolls up to say he smells bull and mocks their list of wrestlers Otis would destroy, and Gable promises him Dozer’s full attention. Otis lays him out and we go to break.

Back from commercial, we get a hype reel for Toni Storm’s SmackDown debut, next week.

Cesaro vs. Otis Dozovic

Dozovic in with shoulder thrusts, big right hand, a left sends Cesaro staggering! Uppercuts as the Swiss Superman finds his feet, Chad Gable runs interference and Otis gets a World’s Strongest Slam off! Cesaro sidesteps the charge, dropkick puts Otis into the post, Gable comes from behind, German suplex and referee Jason Ayers calls it...

Cesaro wins by disqualification, presumably.

Post-match, Cesaro hits Swiss Death on Gable and the crowd calls for the Giant Swing! Double leg, Chad goes-a-swingin’ until Otis breaks it up! Corner body avalanche, giant step... VADER BOMB!

We get a recap of tonight’s opening segment, because god is good and she wanted me to have time to finish eating my bagel. (Everything, toasted, butter AND whipped cream cheese, if you’re curious.)

Paul Heyman is interviewed backstage.

He says Edge will have his sins beaten out of him by Roman Reigns, and that’s not a prediction, it’s—

Big E five feet away doing a version of New Day’s entrance pointed right at Paul E! He tells him he better worry after Edge tapped Roman out at the top of tonight’s show.

Baron Corbin shuffles out to send us to break.

Back from commercial, a disheveled and unshaven Baron Corbin gets on the mic after a recap of his downward spiral.

He says it’s no secret, these last few weeks have been difficult. He’s lost everything, his crown, his car, his investments and his savings. Now the bank is calling and threatening to foreclose on his house. His two-year-old daughter is sick because she has to eat spaghetti out of a can instead of Wagyu beef. The house is a mess because they had to fire the maid, and if this continues they’re gonna have to move in with his wife’s parents.

But there’s hope, he says, because everyone here and at home can help him out of these dark financial times, because he’s started a crowdfunding website called CorbinFundMe, where he’s asking for $100,000. He gets on his knees and begs.

Kevin Owens cuts him off by making his entrance.

Baron says he wants to believe that Kev is out here to help him and asks him to use his influence to get a few other superstars to help and get the fans to fall in line. He talks about how much he and KO are similar and plays on his good nature— KICK TO THE GUT, STUNNER!

Big E makes his entrance and we go to break before our main event.

Big E vs. Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Rollins tells the other three guys to fight it out and he’ll see them Sunday... E CUTS HIM OFF WITH THE SUICIDE SPEAR! OWENS WITH A TOPE CON GIRO! NAKAMURA WITH A DIVING KNEE OFF THE APRON! He throws KO back inside and we go to break.

Inverted exploder on Owens, E comes in, Big Ending on Nakamura... ROLLINS BREAKS IT UP! Action to the floor, Seth takes the announce table apart, KO climbs a ladder... ELBOW DROP OFF THE LADDER AND TO NAKAMURA, PUTTING HIM THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! Back inside, Rollins is on top of things and E is face-down on a ladder...

Seth Rollins wins by pinfall with Blackout into a ladder on Big E.

Post-match, Rollins sets up a ladder and climbs it to retrieve a briefcase and remind us of how one wins Money in the Bank.

That’s the show, folks.
