When Bayley suffered a knee injury in training, WWE had to scramble to figure out what to do about the planned SmackDown women’s title match at Money in the Bank on July 18. They ultimately decided to simply move the match up a couple days, to next week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, and announced that Carmella would be stepping in to replace Bayley.
Naturally, there has been some pushback to this from fans. After all, why is Carmella being chosen here? What makes her deserving of the shot?
Carmella has wrestled just 10 matches in 2021, and has lost 7 of those matches. She was plucked from the Money in the Bank ladder match, where she was also simply allowed entry. On Talking Smack this week, Pat McAfee asked about her being deserving, saying some people don’t think she is, and Carmella had this to say:
“Some people say I don’t… are you kidding me? Not only am I the most beautiful woman in all of WWE, I have a hell of a lot more to offer than just being a pretty face. You want to talk about the best of the best in the women’s division? Let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about Charlotte Flair, beat her. I beat her. Asuka, beat her too. Alexa Bliss, beat her. Let’s see, who else is there? Sasha Banks, beat her. Becky Lynch, I beat her. So why the hell are we talking about me? Yes I’m beautiful but also I can go in the ring. So don’t get it twisted, Pat, I don’t care who is mad. You said some people were upset, why are they upset? They should be so excited that they get to see a two-time SmackDown women’s champion and she’s going to be the most beautiful woman with the title.”
The unfortunate reality of the situation is the blue brand simply doesn’t have much depth in the women’s division right now. Carmella, Liv Morgan, Natalya, Sasha Banks, Tamina, and Zelina Vega are the only wrestlers listed on the SmackDown roster on WWE.com. That likely had a lot to do with Tegan Nox, Shotzi Blackheart, and Toni Storm all getting called up this past week.
For now, Carmella isn’t so much a choice as a lack of options.
Did she sell you on being deserving anyway?
