Well, this is certainly a head-scratcher.
WWE has announced that Roman Reigns will defend the Universal championship against Rey Mysterio inside Hell in a Cell on tomorrow night’s (June 18) episode of SmackDown on FOX.
This championship match was originally booked to take place this Sunday, June 20, at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. But now it has been moved up two days:
Rey Mysterio is out for retribution against Universal Champion Roman Reigns for the attacks that The Head of the Table unleashed on him and his son Dominik, and he is not willing to wait for WWE Hell in a Cell. He wants Reigns tomorrow night on SmackDown.
Thirsty for payback, The Master of the 619 sent out a tweet Thursday night laying down the challenge to The Big Dog for the blue brand.
Reigns accepted on Twitter as well, making it clear that if Rey wants the matchup on Friday night, it would just move up the timetable on disgracing what’s left of Mysterio’s family name.
As a result, the leaders of two of WWE’s most iconic families will go to battle for the Universal Title on SmackDown inside the dreaded structure two days early.
The match was specifically set up for Father’s Day (June 20) given the storyline that saw Roman viciously beat the hell out of Rey’s son, Dominik. It’s not clear why WWE would instead book the the match to take place two days early. Is there an injury? I guess there can still be a non-finish on SmackDown and we get a rematch inside the cell on Sunday, but that seems way too convoluted, even for WWE’s standards.
At the very least, perhaps this increases the chance that another cell match is added to Sunday’s card, such as Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins.
What in the world do you think is going on here, Cagesiders?
