The Mysterios could make history at WrestleMania Backlash

New, 16 comments

As they did on Monday, WWE’s decided to announce a championship match for May 16’s WrestleMania Backlash PPV just hours before the start of one of their weekly television shows.

This time it’s SmackDown, and it’s the show’s Tag titles.

This one has been brewing for a while, as Rey & Dominick Mysterio have been beefing with Dirty Dawgs for months now. The SmackDown Tag belts were left off WrestleMania 37 altogether, so the rivalry has mostly played out on television. In fact, the blue brand’s tag titles haven’t been defended on a PPV since Clash of Champions last September. And that was on the Kickoff. They haven’t been on the main card since Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura beat New Day in a Tables Match on July 19, 2020’s The Horror Show at Extreme Rules.

So maybe if the Mysterios do make history by becoming the first father/son tag champs, they can actually elevate the SmackDown Tag titles to a more prominent position than they’ve had in WWE over the past year.

We’ll see. We’ll also see if, like Monday’s Raw Women’s title announcement, this match gets changed on the May 7 SmackDown. Otis & Chad Gable and Street Profits have also been mixing it up lately with Rey & Dom and Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode, so it wouldn’t be a shock.

Here’s the updated WrestleMania Backlash card:

  • Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Braun Strowman for the WWE championship
  • Bayley vs. Bianca Belair for the SmackDown Women’s title
  • Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Asuka for the Raw women’s championship
  • Dirty Dawgs (c) vs. Dominik & Rey Mysterio for the SmackDown Tag Team titles
