WWE SmackDown results, live blog (May 7, 2021): Throwback edition

WWE SmackDown comes waltzing back into our lives tonight (May 7, 2021) with a show from the ThunderDome at Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, featuring all the latest build to the upcoming WrestleMania Backlash event scheduled on May 16 at the same venue.

Tonight’s episode is being advertised as a special “Throwback” edition of SmackDown. Of course WWE hasn’t explained what that means. No specific legends have been promoted for this card, so it could very well be the current roster featured in more of an old school SmackDown setting.

One bout scheduled to take place tonight is a rematch from WrestleMania 37 - Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins.

Come right back here at 8 p.m. ET when the SmackDown live blog kicks off once the show starts on FOX. It will be below this line here. (REMINDER: NO GIFS OR PICS ARE ALLOWED IN THE COMMENTS SECTION. OFFENDERS WILL BE BANNED.)

And my plate is full and I feel the pull, and my time is spent searching for something that came and went. Take me back, take me back to a golden time, so I can liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.

The show opens with a throwback bumper into a throwback intro video.

Commentary welcomes us to the show and explains the throwback concept to us before tossing to a video package recapping the Rock/HHH main event of the first episode of SmackDown.

Roman Reigns makes his entrance, flanked by Paul Heyman and Jey Uso as usual.

A video package recaps last week’s main event as well.

Paul Heyman gets on the mic and says Roman has asked him to eulogize the career of Daniel Bryan, and they’re going to do so with a ten bell salute. Paul tells the timekeeper to back off and intones the dings himself. Reigns gets on the mic and says unlike Bryan, he’s a man of his word and he does everything he says he will, and because of that we should acknowledge him and celebrate him.

He gives everyone what they want, Fox, WWE, even Daniel Bryan, who he pinned and sent away. And with his absence, they’ve replaced him with someone who most certainly will acknowledge him— JIMMY USO IS BACK!

He embraces his brother and cousin and gives Heyman a shoulder hug, fired up to be back.

Enter Cesaro.

He gets on the mic and says he hates to break it to him, but you can never replace Daniel Bryan, no offense Uce. But he doesn’t have time for Roman tonight, because he’s got a match with Seth Rollins to focus on tonight.

Speaking of Rollins, he jumps Cesaro and referees and road agents swarm and break it up!

But Roman blindsides Cesaro and knocks him back to the floor, where Rollins throws him into the steel steps!

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial, we get an old-school ad for ICOPRO.

Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins

Rollins hot out the gates, punches in the corner, Sling Blade for two. Diving knee follows, another cover, another nearfall. Action to the floor, brawling, back inside, another nearfall while Roman Reigns watches from an office backstage. Forearm for uppercut, Cesaro with body blows, off the ropes, Seth floats out of a press slam, kicks his leg out from under him, and smashes his face into the mat for two!

Half halch, choking the life out of the Swiss Superman, into a front chancery but he blocks the suplex. Cesaro deadlifts, Rollins tries to block but eats the delayed vertical! Uppercuts in the corner, whip across for another one, discus lariat connects and gets the Swiss Superman a two count! Swing blocked, cover for two, reverse the Neutralizer, sunset flip, another two count!

Seth scrambles for the ropes, back body drop puts Cesaro on the apron, Uso runs interference and Rollins hits the superplex into the Falcon Arrow for a tight two! Cesaro tries to get himself together and we go to break.

Back from commercial, Cesaro with a double stomp, only two and Rollins reverses to a crucifix! Cesaro slips through, crosses the legs, Sharpshooter applied in the middle of the ring! Seth crawls, desperate, and Cesaro shifts to an arm-trap crossface to block! Seth rolls through, Death Blow, Black Magic, the Swiss Superman is down but not out!

Rollins lying in wait, charging in, Cesaro scoops him up and lawn darts him into the turnbuckles! Climbing up after him, avalanche Karelin lift reversed into a buckle bomb but Cesaro explodes out of the corner with a lariat! Trading strikes, Seth sends Cesaro to the floor with a monkey flip! Jimmy superkicks Rollins after he gets into it with Jey, Cesaro takes advantage, back inside...

Cesaro wins by pinfall with the Gotch Neutralizer, becoming #1 contender to the WWE Universal Championship.

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial, we get the PSA urging folks to go get their COVID vaccinations, which you should definitely do if you haven’t.

A recap of the match we just saw follows, because nothing says “throwback” quite like watching a thing we just did.

Seth Rollins is backstage ranting at Roman Reigns about “that son of a bitch Jimmy” costing him the match. Roman says he understands where he’s coming from but he needs him to understand where he’s coming from, and thanks to Seth screwing up now he has to deal with Cesaro, but he’ll handle his family too. Seth accepts this and tells him to handle Jimmy or he will.

We get a recap of the infamous grocery store brawl between Booker T and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Teddy Long is backstage chatting with Sonya Deville, thanking her for giving him the stipulation for Cesaro/Rollins. She says she’s got his back, whatever he needs, and Sami Zayn rolls up. He butters Long’s bread and Teddy gives him a match, one-on-one against the Undertaker, playa! Sami points out that Taker is retired, and Long puts him in a ten-man tag team match instead, comedically getting some of the details wrong, like suggesting King Booker is in it rather than King Corbin.

Roman Reigns berates the Usos backstage, asking if he has to clean up their mess now. Jimmy says he won’t let Roman talk to him like he talks to Jey, because he ain’t nobody’s bitch.

And so we go to break.

Carmella vs. Ruby Riott

Collar and elbow, into the corner, Riott with a side headlock, shoulder block, roll through, pass aside, solebutt, Mella floats over a suplex and hits a mat slam! Clubbing blows, Ruby with a headscissors into the turnbuckles! Armbar applied briefly, the STO connects, only two! Carmella rallies...

Carmella wins by submission with the Code of Silence.

We get a recap of Edge winning the tag titles together with noted racist Hulk Hogan back in 2002.

Bayley makes her entrance to send us to break.

Back from commercial we get a recap of that time that Big Show and Brock Lesnar collapsed the ring with a superplex back in 2003.

Bayley is here to hype up some of the women’s champions across WWE history (and explain how they fall short compared to her), including Alundra Blayze, Jacqueline, Lita, Trish Stratus, Beth Phoenix, Molly Holly, and Bianca Belair, who of course gets a nice long segment dedicated to running her down.

Enter Bianca Belair.

She says her confidence is powered by all of her fans and thanks Bayley for her concern but says she should worry about herself because she’s about to become the longest-reigning champion in SmackDown women’s history. Bayley cackles and tries to take her down with a double leg but Bianca blocks and puts her in the corner for strikes!

Big hip toss, lining her up, dropkick connects, kip-up! Bayley grabs her by the earring and throws her into the corner before choking her on the mat and dropping her with the Roseplant!

Backstage, Jey Uso confronts Jimmy over his words earlier and Jimmy tells him that he’s been fighting all of Roman’s battles for him. Jey says he’s family and Reigns being champion makes them all strong, but Jimmy says he needs Jey and they need each other right now. You wanna talk about family, picture this— Roman Reigns Universal Champion, and the Usos as SmackDown Tag Team Champions, that’s representing the family right there.

Rey Mysterio makes his entrance to send us to break.

Back from commercial, we get a recap of a Kurt Angle historical moment.

Dolph Ziggler cuts a promo and somehow the match is against Dominik now? I’m sorry I kinda zoned out for a minute there.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Dominik Mysterio

Ziggler in control early but Mysterio blasts him with a dropkick that sends him to the floor! Dolph trips him up on the apron, body slam on the floor, back inside, cover for two off of a neckbreaker. Back and forth, Dominik snaps one off...

Dominik Mysterio wins by pinfall with a small package.

Reginald is interviewed in Gorilla next to Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. He takes issue with Tamina and puts his pals over as the best tag team in the world before saying he’s going to break Tamina’s spirit before cleansing his tongue with spirits.

They make their entrance and we go to break.

Back from commercial, we get an old school ad for WWF Ice Cream Bars, starring “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, as well as a video of an Arnold Schwarzenegger appearance on SmackDown in 1999.

Roman Reigns asks Paul Heyman to bring him his cousin. Paul makes the mistake of asking which one, Roman glares at him, and Heyman tells him he understands before running off to do just that.

Reginald vs. Tamina

Reginald flips away from the superkick and takes a breather on the floor briefly. He fakes out getting back in, before sliding in and flipping away from Tamina’s strikes! Up top, baiting her in, before flipping over her and landing on his feet! He takes a moment too long to celebrate and Snuka drops him with a big boot!

She goes up top, Shayna shoves her down...

Tamina wins by disqualification, presumably.

Post-match, the two teams brawl! Jax Samoan Drops Tamina into the barricade!

Apollo Crews is hanging out backstage with his teammates tonight, and he talks up their powers and abilities and what they’ll achieve under his leadership, five fingers on one hand.

Big E gets an equal and opposite promo for his own team and we go to break.

Apollo Crews, King Baron Corbin, Chad Gable, Otis Dozovic, & Sami Zayn vs. Big E, Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura, & Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford)

Dawkins and Gable to start, a bit of light mat grappling, Ford tags in and turns the heat up. Crews gets the tag and turns the tables, working Montez over, a change of tags eventually and E and Corbin hoss it up for a bit. The match breaks down into chaotic brawling and we go to break.

Back from commercial, we’re still working our way through the matchups, Nakamura and Zayn at it, a knee goes through Sami’s dome but Baron breaks it up! The match goes into “everybody do something cool” territory, Owens hits a Stunner on Crews, Gable German suplexes him on the floor, Dawkins pounces him, Dozer freight trains him, Ford with the tope con giro!

Zayn blocks the Kinshasa, Corbin tags in...

Apollo Crews, King Baron Corbin, Chad Gable, Otis Dozovic, & Sami Zayn win by pinfall with End of Days from Corbin on Shinsuke Nakamura.

Roman Reigns is backstage talking with Jey Uso, saying they need to find out where Jimmy stands, after the break.

Back from commercial, Roman Reigns gets on the mic.

He says this isn’t how he envisioned his night going. He figured he’d bring Jimmy Uso back in—

Enter Jimmy Uso.

He gets on the mic and talks about Jey being in the I Quit match and refusing to quit until Roman dragged him out there and choked him out, and then Jey quit for him, because he loves him and didn’t want to see him get hurt. He plays a recap of Hell in a Cell and tells Jey not to get hot at him but if it were him he’d never have said “I quit.”

Roman asks if he’s still stuck on the past before saying he and Jey have moved forward and he’s not gonna go back and forth with Jimmy. It’s simple— fall in line, stand with them, and acknowledge him, or take your ass home and explain to your kids why you’re watching at home.

Jimmy turns around and leaves the ring but stops on the ramp to have a think. Jey slides out after him and tries to talk him into acknowledging Roman so they can do their thing.

CESARO BLINDSIDES ROMAN AND BEATS HIM DOWN! Jimmy tries to hold Jey back but Uso breaks away from his brother and makes the save on his cousin! Cesaro beats Jey down but Jimmy finally has had enough and comes to his brother’s aid! SWISS DEATH TAKES HIM OUT! Kick to the midsection, Gotch Neutralizer on Jey! The Swiss Superman hits one on Roman as well!

That’s the show, folks.
