Report: WWE releases Tom Phillips

Fightful is reporting that WWE has released Tom Phillips:

“While not announced officially that Tom Phillips has been let go, he’s the latest in a string of releases affecting backstage personnel and even WWE Studios. We’ve reached out to WWE for confirmation but have yet to hear back. We aren’t sure of the specific arrangement in place for his departure from WWE.”

Phillips was the lead play-by-play commentator on Raw before Adnan Virk replaced him less than two months ago. Samoa Joe was released, Pat McAfee was hired, and Phillips was demoted to 205 Live as part of that commentary team shakeup.

WWE somehow hired Virk without realizing that he was not ready to handle the job, and he was then let go earlier this week. Virk lasted for a total of seven episodes on Raw.

However, the lead play-by-play commentary job on Raw didn’t go back to Phillips; Jimmy Smith was hired for the gig.

That brings us to today’s news that Phillips is now gone from WWE after nearly a decade with the company.
