WWE SmackDown results, live blog (May 21, 2021): Fatal 4-Way

WWE SmackDown comes waltzing back into our lives tonight (May 21, 2021) with a show from the ThunderDome at Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. This is the fallout episode following the WrestleMania Backlash event that happened last weekend at the same venue.

The big match advertised for tonight’s episode is a Fatal 4-Way match for the Intercontinental championship. Apollo Crews will defend the gold against Big E, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn.

With Hell in a Cell coming up on June 20, we’ll also likely get a better sense for which SmackDown feuds are destined for a match inside the cell at that event.

Come right back here at 8 p.m. ET when the SmackDown live blog kicks off once the show starts on FOX. It will be below this line here. (REMINDER: NO GIFS OR PICS ARE ALLOWED IN THE COMMENTS SECTION. OFFENDERS WILL BE BANNED.)

I have sailed to many lands, now I make my final journey. On the bow I stand, west is where I go. Through the night I plough, still my heart, calculate and pray. As the compass swings, my will is strong, I will not be led astray. Mysteries of time, clouds that hide the sun, but I know that I’m here to liveblog this pro wrestling show for these folks.

The show opens with SmackDown’s champions on the stage together, sans Roman Reigns.

Sonya Deville is in the ring and announces WWE’s return to touring shows in July, saying that five-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce is out scouting venues. She introduces the parade of champions, but Apollo Crews takes issue with his introduction, saying that he won’t defend his title, he’ll be RETAINING his title and unleash total destruction and annihilation on Big E, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens.

Enter Paul Heyman, representing Roman Reigns.

He takes issue because Roman is a special boy and says Roman will represent himself later when he doesn’t have to share spotlight with this riff-raff.

Enter Bayley.

She complains about not being included despite not being champion right now, because of how important she is. She calls Bianca Belair out and mocks her “stupid” ponytail before claiming that she’s a criminal, not a champion. She demands Sonya strip her of the title, Bianca comes to the ring and tells her to go ahead and take the title if she wants it so bad, and Bayley begs off before Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler attack Belair from behind!

Natalya and Tamina make the save and the heels stand tall as we go to break.

Bayley, Nia Jax, & Shayna Baszler vs. Bianca Belair, Natalya, & Tamina

I miss the return from commercial break and the match is in progress with the heels working Tamina over at length. Natalya tags in and gets a hope spot but is quickly isolated and worked over by the heels herself. Belair tags in and finally we get a proper hot tag but Baszler almost gets her in the Kirifuda Clutch! Backflip up and over, thrust spinebuster connects, Bianca up top but Shayna’s teammates pull her out of the ring... DIVING CROSSBODY WIPES THEM OUT BUT BELAIR HURT HER KNEE!

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial, Bayley is in control of Belair, double chickenwing, Bianca gets away, hot tag to Tamina! Snuka with a snap scoop powerslam, tag to Natalya, big German suplex, quick tag back. Catapult into a superkick, Tamina with the cover... BAYLEY GETS HER HAND ON THE ROPES! Neidhart with the Sharpshooter but Baszler had tagged in!

Snuka cuts her off with a headbutt, Nattie reapplies but gets denied, Bayley in to run interference but she gets dropped by the discus lariat! Jax with a pounce, Tamina with a kick combo, Shayna kicks her head off, Belair with a right, handspring, Bayley cuts her off, Bayley-to-Belly on the floor! Nattie boots Bayley off the apron and Baszler locks the Kirifuda Clutch in...

Bayley, Nia Jax, & Shayna Baszler win by submission with the Kirifuda Clutch from Baszler on Natalya.

Big E is interviewed backstage.

He’s in a good mood and he puts over his opponents tonight because they’re the iron to sharpen his iron, the very best to prove that he’s amongst the very best.

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial we get another bumper about the return of live crowds in July.

Another of Aleister Black’s lessons from his father follows.

We get a montage of Shinsuke Nakamura’s adventures with King Baron Corbin’s stolen crown and Corbin gets on the mic.

He says he wasn’t gonna say anything and just let his actions do the talking, but he can’t help himself, and that was the most disrespectful thing he’s ever seen, and Nakamura is no king. He insults Shinsuke’s cat and says he’s gonna beat him and take his crown back.

Enter Rick Boogs, playing his guitar.

He says he came here to rock with the real king of SmackDown, Shinsuke Nakamura, and he plays him in as we go to break.

King Baron Corbin vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Back from commercial, Corbin catches a kick and counters to a powerbomb... NOPE! Hammerlock punches in the corner, half nelson chinlock, grinding Nakamura down. Elbow gets a nearfall, Shinsuke gets a 540 roundhouse, a lungblower, off the ropes, sliding Kinshasa! Lying in wait, STO... NOT ENOUGH! Charging in, Baron sidesteps, big German suplex... STILL NO!

Knee lift to break away, off the ropes, Deep Six catches him, only two! Boogs plays guitar, End of Days countered...

Shinsuke Nakamura wins by pinfall with a small package.

Jimmy Uso is backstage chatting with Sonya Deville about the return of the Usos.

She questions how much Jey is into the reunion but Jimmy says his brother has his back and they want the Street Profits. Sonya says a match of that caliber has to be advertised, so next week it’ll be the Usos vs. the Street Profits.

Enter Roman Reigns, flanked by Jey Uso and Paul Heyman as usual, to send us to break.

Back from commercial, Kevin Owens cuts a promo backstage.

He harkens back to when he was called the Prize Fighter and says he’s going to live up to that nickname tonight and he doesn’t care what it takes, he’ll do it.

We get a Cesaro/Rollins video package.

Meanwhile, the ThunderDome has reached a fever pitch of “Roman sucks!” chants and the Big Dog gets on the mic.

He says he believes himself to be a humble man and he takes every opportunity to teach his sons about humility. He doesn’t like to brag on live television, so he’s gonna let Paul Heyman celebrate him. Paul puts him over as undefeated and runs down the list of men he’s beaten before asking Roman if there’s anything else he can do for him, and Reigns asks him to bring Jimmy Uso here.

Paul calls for Jimmy to be brought down, but instead Cesaro makes his entrance, arm in a sling.

He says he’s been looking for Seth Rollins and couldn’t find him, but instead he heard this annoying yapping in his ear and realized it was Roman. Reigns asks what he wants him to do, break the other arm? Cesaro says it’s a flesh wound and he’d beat Roman one-handed anyway, so why not go again at Hell in a Cell if you’re man enough?

SETH ROLLINS BLINDSIDES CESARO AND BEATS HIM DOWN! Referees pull them apart and Seth goes to leave but returns and goes after Cesaro’s injured arm some more... BLACKOUT ON THE RAMP! Rollins goes to leave again but then returns and hits a second Blackout, right on the diamond plate!

A stretcher comes down for the Swiss Superman and we go to break.

Back from commercial, we get a recap of what we just saw.

Seth Rollins is interviewed backstage and claims he didn’t know what happened and he blacked out. Cesaro is rolled past him and he freaks out and grabs him by the lapels, screaming and asking him why he makes him do this and when is he gonna learn before the paramedics manage to push Cesaro past him.

Robert Roode cuts a promo where he tells Dominik Mysterio to not let his win go to his head, because he can’t lean on his dad tonight and he’s gonna prove once and for all that Dom doesn’t belong here.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Robert Roode

Roode with a suplex almost immediately, another one, a third but Mysterio reverses into a small package for two! Whip across, shoulder thrust, setting Dominik up top, jockeying for position, Mysterio shoves him off, diving crossbody... NOPE! Back elbow, tornado DDT blocked, Robert with a powerbomb lift but Dom reverses to a Frankensteiner that puts him on the second!

Dolph Ziggler runs interference, Rey fights him off for his son, Roode sits down into a pin for two! Sidestep the charge, Roo eats the post, 619 connects! Mysterio up top...

Dominik Mysterio wins by pinfall with a frog splash.

Jey Uso is walking backstage when Jimmy rolls up to tell him about the Street Profits match next week.

Jey complains about him booking him in tag matches without his approval but Jimmy tells him to man up, this isn’t about Roman Reigns, this is about them. Jey says he has to tell Roman about the match and he owes him as much.

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial, Jey Uso is explaining the tag match Jimmy booked, but when he says “we” got the Street Profits, Roman Reigns takes issue with that and calls him selfish.

Roman tells him not to forget that it’s the two of them that represent the family, hugs him, and tells him something we can’t quite hear.

Street Profits get a promo and they make fun of the Usos’ family issues.

Sami Zayn is interviewed in Gorilla about his match.

He takes issue with being reminded of his past failures and calls Kayla Braxton a corporate hack and a propagandist.

Sami and Kevin Owens make their entrances and send us to break.

Back from commercial, we get some hype for next week’s shows.

Apollo Crews (c) vs. Big E vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn (WWE Intercontinental Championship)

E and Crews brawling in the ring to start, with Owens and Zayn fighting on the floor. KO back inside, enzuigiri drops Big but Sami blindsides him and beats him down right after! Choking Kev on the second rope, E pops up and pulls Zayn to the floor! Clubbing blows on the apron, a right hand for Apollo as he comes over and Big throws him up on the apron so he can get some too!

Double big splash on the apron, Owens off the ropes... BIG MAN TOPE CON GIRO SENDS US TO BREAK!

Back from commercial, Crews lays E out with a dropkick and ends up brawling with Owens on the floor! Apollo with a moonsault off the apron, Sami cuts him off, his own moonsault off the barricade connects and KO freight trains him! Up top, senton atomico... E BREAKS IT UP! A bit of chaos, Zayn with the corner exploder, Owens ducks the Helluva Kick but Sami plants him with a Michinoku Driver... NOPE!

Avalanche fisherman buster from KO... CREWS BREAKS IT UP! He and Big get back into it, cut the suicide spear off with a knee, apron Stunner blocked, Apollo with a Death Valley Driver on the apron... BIG E HITS THE SUICIDE SPEAR ON CREWS AND WE GO TO BREAK!

Back from commercial, Crews is beating E down in the ring, nearfall off a suplex! Apollo blasts Owens off the apron, cuts Zayn off, and beats Big down in the middle of the ring! E with belly-to-belly suplexes for everybody! Off the ropes, Sami cuts him off with a Helluva Kick but KO puts him off the ropes, pop-up powerbomb denied, Half & Half denied... STEENBREAKER FOR TWO!

Kev and Apollo jockeying for position in the turnbuckles, Sami cuts Crews off with a jawbreaker, whip reversed, boot blocked, Apollo looking for the head-and-leg capture suplex and E comes from behind to German suplex them both! Frog splash from Owens... BIG E KICKS OUT! KO running wild, cannonball on a stacked up Crews and Owens but Zayn hits Half & Half and follows it with the Blue Thunder Driver... STILL NO!

The match breaks down, Owens with a pop-up powerbomb... SO CLOSE! Brawling on the floor, Zayn pulls KO out and hits a half nelson suplex on the floor! Headed inside, E gets him with the Rock Bottom, floats out of an Olympic Slam, Big Ending... COMMANDER AZEEZ PULLS BIG E OUT OF THE RING AND BEATS HIM DOWN! E puts him into the post and gets away!

E back in the ring and something goes weird with the lights... ALEISTER BLACK IS HERE! He slides into the ring, Crews grabs E’s leg... BLACK MASS KNOCKS BIG E OUT! Al leaves the ring...

Apollo Crews wins by pinfall with a lateral press on Big E to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Post-match, Apollo Crews poses with the title while Aleister Black looks on.

That’s the show, folks.
