WWE SmackDown results, live blog (May 14, 2021): Women’s tag titles

New, 201 comments

WWE SmackDown comes waltzing back into our lives tonight (May 14, 2021) with a show from the ThunderDome at Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. This is the go-home episode leading into the WrestleMania Backlash event scheduled on May 16 at the same venue.

Tonight’s episode features a women’s tag team championship match; Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax will put their titles on the line against Tamina and Natalya in a rematch from WrestleMania 37.

There’s also the matter of Jimmy Uso defiantly standing up to Roman Reigns and refusing to fall in line. Cesaro looks to take advantage of their family drama and put himself in a strong position to win the Universal championship at WrestleMania Backlash.

Come right back here at 8 p.m. ET when the SmackDown live blog kicks off once the show starts on FOX. It will be below this line here. (REMINDER: NO GIFS OR PICS ARE ALLOWED IN THE COMMENTS SECTION. OFFENDERS WILL BE BANNED.)

I wake up in the morning and the sun begins to shine, the day did sneak up on the night. I see your face and I see myself and I get a little taste of life. I try to stand it for a while but I’m in a trance. Hey baby tell me can’t you hear me calling, while I liveblog this here pro wrestling show?

The show opens with Jey Uso in the ring and on the mic.

He says Jimmy Uso has driven them to have to take care of some family business tonight and introduces Roman Reigns.

Roman makes his entrance, flanked by Paul Heyman as usual, and we get a lengthy recap of last week’s show.

Reigns says they’ve got a lot of problems, including Jimmy, but he wants to address Cesaro first. He likes him! Like a lot of the boys in the back, he thinks he’s great, and he’d go so far as to say Cesaro’s one of the best wrestlers in the world, but as tribal chief and head of the table, he’s so much more than just a wrestler.

You really think WWE or Fox want Cesaro in his spot? Look at the facts, Cesaro hasn’t had one world title match, whereas Roman has had 39 such matches. As far as Jimmy goes—

Enter Jimmy Uso.

He gets on the mic and says all he can hear is the Tribal Chief running his mouth while his own brother is standing next to him, acting like his bitch. He’s wearing a “Nobody’s Bitch” shirt and says he has one for Jey when he’s ready to come be with him, and he expects Cesaro to beat Roman. Jey demands he respect the family, Jimmy says he’s all about family, and Reigns takes issue with that.

He says that means that Jimmy has to be all about him for everything he’s done for the family, but Jimmy doesn’t go with it, saying Roman is part of the family, but not all of it. Reigns asks if he really thinks he can’t beat Cesaro, and Jimmy says he doesn’t. They bicker, Roman tries to put him in his place, saying he’s the one that carries the burden and the responsibility that he can never handle. Reigns stops and shifts gears, asking if Jimmy really thinks he can do what he does and be the man around here.

Jimmy does, and Roman mockingly suggests that he just go ahead and do it, before getting to his point— beat Cesaro, tonight. Jimmy calls the Swiss Superman out, and he enters, albeit in street clothes.

Cesaro accepts the challenge and tells Roman that he’s gonna beat Jimmy tonight and then on Sunday he’s gonna beat him for the Universal Championship.

Commentary hypes the show up and we go to break.

Natalya & Tamina vs. Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler (c) (WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship)

Natalya & Tamina win by pinfall with the Superfly Splash from Tamina on Nia Jax to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.

Post-match, Nattie and Tamina are interviewed.

Neidhart says this is for anybody who thinks their dream has passed them by, and she’s very proud of Tamina. Snuka offers her gratitude to Nattie and to the WWE Universe and also their families.

We see Apollo Crews and Commander Azeez walking backstage to send us to break.

Back from commercial we get a graphic for Cesaro vs. Jimmy Uso.

Paul Heyman runs into an interview backstage.

He asks everyone to stop with the hypotheticals and says he simply knows that Roman Reigns can and will defeat Cesaro on Sunday.

In the ring, Commander Azeez is standing on a dais as Apollo Crews gets on the mic.

He says we get to witness as special presentation and talks up his title reign, saying he may be Intercontinental Champion for life. For his acts of bravery and continued loyalty, he presents Azeez with the Nigerian Medal of Honor.

He does so.

Big E appears on the tron and calls the award a sham and tells Crews not to get used to holding his title, because he’s still got to feel his power.

Enter Sami Zayn.

He says E makes a joke of everything but he respects a good awards ceremony.

Crews yells at him for disrespect and Sami admits he has a bone to pick because he’s holding his title. Azeez throws the dais out of the ring and they square up for a fight.

Enter Kevin Owens.

He slides into the ring chasing after Sami, but Zayn ducks him and Crews and Azeez beat KO down! E joins the fun, the brawl continues, Stunner to Zayn, Big Ending to Owens, Apollo runs away with the help of Commander Azeez.

A recap of tag title business follows, sponsored by Pizza Hut, who continue airing ads aimed at me every week despite not having any delivery locations in Philadelphia. I WANT YOUR PIZZA, PIZZA HUT. I HAVE AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION TO YOU. LET ME BUY YOUR PIZZA.

The Mysterios make their entrance to send us to break.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rey Mysterio

Collar and elbow, Mysterio gets a hold but Ziggler goes right for the ropes. Go-behind to a waistlock, side headlock, shot off, shoulder block, Rey knocks him to the floor, low suicide dive into a splash and we go to break.

Back from commercial, Ziggler is in control and beating Mysterio down in the corner. Continuing to work him over, inverted powerslam for two, shifting gears to an arm-trap reverse chinlock, into a bow-and-arrow but Rey gets the ropes for the break! Boot up, tornado DDT connects, Mysterio gets some separation and starts fighting back into it.

Rey up top, Dolph cuts him off, off the top with a seated senton, roll-through buzzsaw kick... NOPE! Ziggler ducks the 619, hits the Fameasser... STILL NO! Duck a superkick, basement dropkick to the knee, Rey off the ropes, Dolph lays him out with a superkick! Back and forth, small package... IT’S OVER!

Rey Mysterio wins by pinfall with a small package.

Post-match, Dominik Mysterio blocks an attack from Robert Roode!

Cesaro is interviewed backstage.

He talks about the voice in his head that tells him he thinks he can every time he runs into a roadblock or uncertainty in his career, and Jimmy Uso needs to decide if he wants to be known as Jimmy Uso or as Roman Reigns’ cousin. He knows he can beat Roman on Sunday and he’s going to.

Bianca Belair makes her entrance and we go to break.

Back from commercial, the Mysterios are interviewed.

They talk about how big a deal their match on Sunday is when the Dirty Dawgz roll up to say they’re gonna put Rey out to pasture for good. Dominik says they’re gonna win the titles, and that’s that segment.

Michael Cole interviews Bianca Belair in the ring.

She says she’s the bEST and people have been doubting her her whole life but she doesn’t listen to them. She asks where Bayley is and that gets us a replay of last week’s segment.

Bayley appears on the tron to laugh about Bianca and her earrings. Belair asks her to come see her braid and Bayley says she’s far, far away and Bianca is a big ol’ idiot if she thinks she’s gonna get in the same ring with her before Sunday. Belair says she’s gonna hurt her feelings and Bayley is only so mad because she got thrown down the ramp by the Bella Twins at WrestleMania while she was in the main event winning the title.

We see King Baron Corbin backstage polishing his crown, and no that is not a euphemism.

Shinsuke Nakamura gets an inset promo where he points out that he’s the King of Strong Style and tonight, their kingdoms will crash but only one will survive... his.

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial, King Baron Corbin gets an inset promo.

He says Shinsuke Nakamura has no style but he can hand out beatings dressed however he likes.

King Baron Corbin vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Going for a vertical suplex, Nakamura slips out, 540 roundhouse into Good Vibrations! Whip across, duck the lariat, dropkick connects! Trading kicks, enzuigiri from Shinsuke, slide out and back in, Nakamura catches the lariat and reverses to a cross armbar! Looking for a folding press out of it, powerbomb lift, short powerbomb...

King Baron Corbin wins by pinfall with a folding press.

Post-match, Nakamura interrupts Corbin’s celebration and lays him out with Kinshasa! He picks Baron’s crown up, acting like it’s incredibly heavy, and crowns himself.

Five-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville are chatting backstage when an irate Apollo Crews rolls up to demand consequences for Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Big E.

Pearce says they’re trying to figure out who Crews should wrestle next week, and Deville accidentally suggests “all three”, and Adam makes the four-way title match official! Crews storms off, and Pearce tells Sonya not to undermine him in front of the superstars.

Jimmy Uso is shown walking backstage, our main event is after the break.

Back from commercial, we see Shinsuke Nakamura posing with the crown in a mirror.

Aleister Black gets another vignette where he reads from his storybook, this one about how his father taught him not to fight his nature as a cruel man.

Jimmy Uso is interviewed in Gorilla.

He’s surprised his first match back isn’t with his brother Jey, since the Usos are the hottest tag team in WWE, but he’s come back to see Jey running errands for Roman and if Reigns could stay out of it and let them win the tag titles, they’d be cool.

And so we go to break

Cesaro vs. Jimmy Uso

Collar and elbow, struggling around the ring, Uso grabs an armbar and Cesaro reverses out and knocks him back with a dropkick! Off the ropes, drop down, leapfrog, snap scoop powerslam from the Swiss Superman for two! Samoan Drop gets Jimmy back into it, cover for two, crossface strikes into a reverse chinlock! Deadlift vertical suplex to counter, catch a boot but Uso gets the enzuigiri on the flipside!

Ode to Rikishi ducked, cover for two, catch the superkick and nail Jimmy with an uppercut! Whip across, Uso sidesteps the shoulder block and posts Cesaro! Clothesline sends him to the floor, off the ropes, suicide dive connects! Jimmy comes up clutching his knee and we go to break!

Back from commercial, block the Neutralizer with a back body drop and cut the springboard off with a superkick, cover for two! Cesaro with the deadlift superplex, Uso crawls out of the ring for a breather! Cannonball off the apron!

Roman Reigns and Jey Uso come down and get involved...

The match goes to a no-contest presumably.

Jimmy walks off, complaining that he could have won the match, and Roman berates him, telling him nobody cares about “exhibition matches” and they had to take care of business.

Cesaro attacks Jey while they bicker but Reigns returns to take him out! Cesaro fights them off, uppercuts aplenty, Roman runs off... Neutralizer on Jey! Cesaro taunts Reigns, demanding he do something before hitting a second Neutralizer!

That’s the show, folks.
