WrestleMania Backlash gets its SmackDown women’s title match

WWE.com

When Drew McIntyre won a triple threat match on Monday Night Raw to secure his spot in a WWE championship match against Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania Backlash, it seemed likely the rest of the card would follow suit and feature mostly rematches from WrestleMania 37.

In the case of the SmackDown women’s championship match, that won’t be the case:

Belair won the title from Sasha Banks in a historic match in the main event of night one of WrestleMania on April 10 in Tampa. Days later on that week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, Bayley gave an interview in which she mocked Belair for crying, claiming it was because she didn’t actually think she could win, and challenged her to a match for the title because that’s not how a champion should be.

Obviously, then, Belair accepted the challenge. They’ll meet for the title on May. 16, 2021, in Tampa.

There are still a few weeks to see where Banks fits into all this.

The updated WrestleMania Backlash match card:

  • Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Drew McIntyre (WWE championship)
  • Bianca Belair (c) vs. Bayley (SmackDown women’s championship)
