WWE SmackDown results, live blog (Apr. 16, 2021): WrestleMania 37 fallout

WWE SmackDown comes waltzing back into our lives tonight (Apr. 16, 2021) with a show from the ThunderDome at Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, featuring all the fallout from the WrestleMania 37 pay-per-view (PPV) extravaganza that went down this past weekend at Raymond James Stadium.

Tonight’s episode includes the Dirty Dawgs (Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode) defending the SmackDown tag team titles against the Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford). Elsewhere on the card, Rey Mysterio will battle Otis in a singles match that could have tag title implications.

WWE is also teasing that we’ll find out what’s next for Bianca Belair and Roman Reigns after their huge wins at WrestleMania.

Come right back here at 8 p.m. ET when the SmackDown live blog kicks off once the show starts on FOX. It will be below this line here. (REMINDER: NO GIFS OR PICS ARE ALLOWED IN THE COMMENTS SECTION. OFFENDERS WILL BE BANNED.)

We all see black and white when it comes to someone else’s fight. No one ever gets involved, apathy can never solve, but I sure can liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.

The show opens with a recap of the Universal Championship match at WrestleMania.

Michael Cole welcomes us to the show and introduces his new broadcast partner, Pat McAfee.

Roman Reigns makes his entrance, flanked by Paul Heyman and Jey Uso as usual, and holds his title high while pyro goes off.

Roman takes in the crowd’s displeasure for a long beat, hesitating to get on the mic.

Eventually he says he put a lot of eyes on SmackDown, and for the new viewer, he asks Heyman to talk about the men he beat on Sunday, and he does so, putting over both Edge’s and Daniel Bryan’s credentials before pointing out what a big deal it is that Reigns pinned both of them at the same time. Roman says he called his shot and he delivered and crows that he’ll probably never be put in a triple threat again after he eradicated two Hall of Famers like that.

Enter Cesaro.

He strides to the ring mic in hand but Roman and his entourage leave without paying him any mind.

Commentary promises us a big WrestleMania moment, after the break.

Back from commercial we get a pictoral recap of WrestleMania.

Five-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce is chatting backstage with Sonya Deville when Cesaro rolls up.

Cesaro asks if they saw what Roman Reigns did just now and says he thinks nobody’s gonna step up to him, but he will, and he wants a match against Roman tonight, no title on the line. Sonya says she’ll chat with Roman.

Commentary recaps Cesaro/Rollins with an emphasis on Cesaro’s UFO.

Otis Dozovic vs. Rey Mysterio

Dozer with a shoulder block, Mysterio ends up on the floor, Rey comes back and tries to cut him off but Otis gets him in the Tree of Woe and lights him up with strikes! Mysterio sits up to dodge the charge, diving seated senton, off the ropes with a sliding knee... NOPE! Front kick, whip reversed, duck a lariat, springboard crossbody caught into a World’s Strongest Slam!

Up top, 747 Splash... MYSTERIO ROLLS OUT OF THE WAY! Dropkick into the ropes, drop toehold... 619! Rey perches and dives...

Rey Mysterio wins by pinfall with a crucifix pin.

Paul Heyman is shown backstage preparing for an interview, and we go to break.

Back from commercial we get a highlight reel of various media reactions to WrestleMania.

Paul Heyman is interviewed backstage in a very loud purple paisley tie.

He mocks the idea of Cesaro challenging Roman Reigns and suggests the WrestleMania rain delay was god crying because he knew Roman was winning. He throws every insult in the book at Cesaro, saying he’s not an attraction, he’s a joke, and he’s stopping the train before it leaves the station by giving him what he wants tonight, live on SmackDown.

We get another replay of Cesaro hitting the UFO on Rollins.

Sami Zayn makes his entrance, furious as usual.

He gets on the mic and complains about how WrestleMania was supposed to be his vindication before everything went to crap. He recounts the events of his match from his point of view and blames his concern for Logan Paul for his loss to Kevin Owens. He demands his revenge and calls Kev out to give him what he wants, claiming that tonight there’s nothing to distract him.

Kevin Owens makes his entrance and we go to break.

Back from commercial in time for the bell.

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

Zayn runs away at first but Owens catches him and takes him back inside, backing him off with chops and punches in the corner. Sami recovers and lights KO up, choking him in the ropes, back and forth as they brawl and just try to tear each other apart. Fighting up in the turnbuckles, Sami is in control and we go to break.

Post-match, Kev grabs Sami out on the ramp and beats him down some more! He takes him back in the ring, kick to the gut, Stunner!

Backstage, Apollo Crews is hanging out with his new pal, Babatunde Dabba-Kato Commander Azeez and crowing about his victory.

He says he’d be happy to give Big E a rematch except he’s not here tonight after getting spiked by Azeez’ Nigerian Nail, and he formally introduces us to the Commander, a former member of the Nigerian Elite Guard who will annihilate anyone who tries to come for the title.

Street Profits make their entrance and we’re informed it’ll be Bianca Belair’s victory party, after the break.

Back from commercial, the Street Profits hold court in the ring.

Montez Ford sings a few bars and they talk about how they’re gonna do some spring cleaning and send the Dirty Dawgz back to 1987 and Bianca Belair winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship has inspired them to go after the titles with renewed vigor.

We get a recap of Bianca’s victory and the Profits introduce her for her celebration.

She makes her entrance, title around her waist, and gets on the mic.

She says she’s been floating since Saturday night and she feels so blessed. Despite all the setbacks and the struggles she never stopped believing that this moment was possible, and her family has been making history for generations, and no matter how hard things may get, you can change the game. But it’s not just about her, it’s also about Sasha Banks.

She thanks Sasha and says there’s nobody she’d rather have made history with. She tells Montez he and Angelo best get their titles back because everybody holds gold in their house.

A fuming Sasha Banks is interviewed backstage.

She points to the scar on her midsection from the hair whipping Belair gave her but she’s too angry to make words and storms off.

We get another replay of the UFO clip.

Bayley is interviewed backstage and mocks Bianca for crying in the main event, saying she was really crying because she didn’t think she could win, and what kind of champion is that? So she’s challenging her and taking her title.

Dirty Dawgz make their entrance to send us to break.

Dirty Dawgz (Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode) (c) vs. Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship)

Ziggler and Dawkins to start, Dolph in control with a dropkick but Angelo gets him in the corner, tag to Ford, big dropkick for a shockingly deep two! Quick tags, Roode gets in, they work him over just the same, double flapjacks for everybody! Corkscrew lariat, bulldog... POUNCE! Street Profits are fired up and we go to break.

Back from commercial, the champs are on the down and out with Dawkins grinding Roode down with a headlock. Shot off, shoulder block, Ziggler and his new ridiculous braid come in and turn the tide! Nearfall off a suplex, Dolph tags in and goes for a dropkick but Angelo catches him and catapults him into the corner, opening the path for a tag!

Tags made, Ford comes in hot with lariats, going to town on Roode! Dropkicks all around, a wicked lariat takes Ziggler out, whip reversed, lands on his feet off a back suplex and hits one on Robert, following it with a standing moonsault... NOT ENOUGH! Tope con giro and a blind tag, throwing Roo back inside, Sky High, tag back, Montez off the top... ZIGGLER BREAKS IT UP!

Cesaro is interviewed backstage.

He says Paul Heyman was right about a lot of derogatory things he said but he’s going to prove him wrong tonight in that he DOES belong in the ring with Roman Reigns when he beats Jey Uso tonight.

And so we go to break.

Back from commercial we get another pictoral recap of WrestleMania.

Natalya vs. Shayna Baszler

Little a mat wrestling early, for treat, Natalya going for an early Sharpshooter but Nia Jax pulls her partner out of the ring! Natalya wins by pinfall with a schoolboy pin.

Post-match, Tamina lays Jax out with a boot!

Jey Uso cuts a promo on Cesaro backstage.

He accuses Cesaro of being a one-trick pony and asks if he can do the UFO with no teeth. He’s gonna get him tonight and show everyone why they call him main event Jey Uso.

And on that note, we go to break.

Back from commercial, we get some hype for tomorrow morning’s episode of Talking Smack.
