WrestleMania 37 was a blast.
The consistency across both nights really jumps out. The two main events delivered, the mid-card matches did exactly what they were supposed to do and the bad stuff (hi, Fiend!) was pretty sparse.
While nothing places inside the Top 10, the depth of this year’s show is what impresses. It’s one of only three WrestleManias to land two separate matches inside the Top 20, with great stuff from the likes of Rollins & Cesaro and Owens & Zayn fleshing things out. Plus, an inspired performance from a certain Bunny.
There was lots to love over the course of the weekend. But, for the love of Christ, can we please figure out the women’s tag team division? Okay, deep breath.

When the biggest complaint about a WrestleMania main event is that it should have been even longer, you know you’ve done something right. This was our first chance to see the dastardly dark side of Roman Reigns in front of an audience, and it was well worth the wait. As dangerous as he is conniving, the ‘Mania crowd finally has a real reason to hate him, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings. This was Reigns’ fifth Mania main event spot, and it’s easily the best of the bunch. Not only that, it’s the best WrestleMania match of Edge and Daniel Bryan’s respective careers, as well. Three generational talents with wildly different styles and personas, it not only demanded your attention in the moment, it made you fascinated to see what happens next.

One of the great things about a two-night WrestleMania is that Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks fully got their time to shine. There was such a feeling of exhilaration watching these two absolutely live up to the moment. After the women’s main event at ‘Mania 35 underwhelmed a bit, Sasha and Bianca more than earned the stage, and they made the entire thing look effortless. I still can’t get that hair snap out of my head.

The main events get most of the headlines, but a classic WrestleMania is made in the mid-card. WWE has long struggled with booking non-title feuds, but the build and execution here was excellent. Cesaro’s first singles match at WrestleMania should earn him plenty more, and hopefully an even more elevated push. I can envision a slow burn that sees him challenging Roman Reigns for the strap at SummerSlam, if they play their cards right. This match also served to remind us just how good Seth Rollins is. He’s firmly in “a loss doesn’t hurt him” territory, which is such a useful tool. Put him in the ring with just about anybody and it’s guaranteed to work. On this night, he and Cesaro more than just worked. They shined.

Maria Menounos. Mr. T. Snooki. Move aside, schlubs, there’s a new WrestleMania celebrity performance at the top of the heap! Perhaps the most impressive thing about Bad Bunny’s entire arc is how legitimate the entire thing felt. This was so much more than some stunt appearance to boost social media engagement (*cough* Logan Paul *cough*). He’s a bonafide wrestling nut who got to live out his dream on the grandest of stages. The fact that he took it so seriously, and pushed himself to the extent that he did, deserves so much appreciation and praise. The boyhood dream came true at WrestleMania!

This is another great example of what having a great mid-card can do for a show. KO and Sami are just about the two most reliable guys in the company, if not all of wrestling, so this was a no-brainer. And sometimes that’s just fine. This is a match I wanted to like more than I did. There was an undeniable sense of change in the air at Raymond James Stadium all weekend, and seeing Rhea with the belt was exhilarating. But the match itself, while perfectly fine, never locked into a groove and felt more stagnant than staggering. Asuka being 0-4 at WrestleMania doesn’t sit right with me, either. She deserves a big ‘Mania moment before it’s too late.

For just the fourth time in WrestleMania history, the show opened with a defense of either the Heavyweight or Universal Championship. The others (Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio at XXVII, Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan at XXVIII, Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar at 35) range from serviceable to unfathomable. It’s a tough spot. The match between Lashley and McIntyre never felt as momentous as it should have, it being the first match in front of the trademarked WWE Universe in over a year. It started sloppy, it ended meekly and those in Tampa were denied the opportunity to finally celebrate a title victory with The Scottish Warrior. But listen, anybody who manages to get distracted by somebody ringside shouting “Bobby!” doesn’t deserve to be champion anyway.

Why did a match centered around ridiculing somebody’s intelligence make me feel so dumb? Bizarre build aside, the match just wasn’t very good and I remain befuddled by the constant presence of Shane McMahon at WrestleMania. Who is this for? Bayley didn’t have a ‘Mania match. The Street Profits were delegated to SmackDown the night before. It boggles the mind. Shane’s matches all come down what God-forsaken bump he’s going to take, so when even that ends up being underwhelming? Well, folks, we’ve got a stinker on our hands.
