Sonya Deville was well on her way to becoming WWE’s breakout superstar of 2020, largely thanks to her stellar mic work opposite Mandy Rose during their summer feud.
Deville’s year in the ring suddenly came to an end in August when she lost a Loser Leaves WWE match at SummerSlam. Deville took an extended break from WWE after a very scary real life situation where a stalker broke into her house with the intention to kidnap her.
She returned to SmackDown television in early January 2021. Many fans were hopeful that this meant she would be a main player in the women’s Royal Rumble match. But WWE instead adhered to the SummerSlam stipulation that took Deville out of in-ring competition. Sonya is now an authority figure on Friday nights alongside five-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce.
Speaking with WWE’s The Bump, Deville was asked about when she might return to the ring. Here’s what she said about it:
“I don’t know right now. I like rocking my suits, my three piece suits every week, and calling the shots. I think being in charge is something that kind of comes natural to me. I think I’m a born leader, so I like this new role. But you know, I’m Sonya Deville, and I’m a fighter at the end of the day. And obviously I love to get down and get dirty, and I like to kick ass. I’m sure everything will come full circle eventually.”
There’s definitely a need for new opponents to work with top stars like Sasha Banks, Bianca Belair, Bayley, Asuka, Charlotte Flair, and Tamina, so it should only be a matter of time until Deville is back in the ring and kicking ass, just like she loves to do.
What do you think is the most sensible timetable for Sonya’s eventual return to the ring?
