Murphy was a long-time disciple of Seth Rollins for most of 2020, helping The Messiah commit dastardly deeds like extracting a man’s eyeball. By the end of the year, though, he was a babyface who rejected Rollins and was dating that eyeball-less man’s daughter.
Then some strange circumstances led to Steve Cutler’s release, and Murphy was suddenly off television for an extended period of time. He didn’t sound too happy with WWE, that’s for sure.
Murphy’s absence largely coincided with Seth Rollins’ paternity leave. The Messiah’s recent return to SmackDown seemed like Murphy’s best bet to return to relevance. That’s what happened on last week’s (Mar. 5) broadcast. Because nothing matters, out of nowhere Murphy asked to join up with Seth again. Rollins understandably told Murphy to get out of his face.
WWE posted a picture on Instagram of that encounter between Messiah and disciple, and Murphy decided to respond to it. He offered the following explanation for why his relationship with Aalyah and the Mysterios is over:
“Let’s point out the obvious! The Mysterio’s used me! I never needed them! I’m beyond one of the most talent in-ring performers on the planet! Aalyah used me to be on tv and advance an acting career. Dominik used me so he had a reason to stand ringside. Rey was jealous that I became the new face of the cruiserweight and he was left out of the discussion. They took what they wanted then they left me in the shadows! Sounds like my time in NXT.”
Yes Murphy, I’m sure that legendary wrestler Rey Mysterio was jealous of your achievements on 205 Live.
So Murphy threw the Mysterios under the bus while attempting to make sense of his encounter with Seth last week. But the plot thickens! Murphy’s explanation is now deleted, so I guess that means it’s not part of kayfabe? Or maybe we’ll find out on SmackDown that Rey’s extracted eyeball hacked Murphy’s account?
What do you think is going on here, Cagesiders?
