Report: Cesaro will re-sign with WWE

A recent report from Wrestling Inc reminded us that Cesaro’s latest WWE contract would likely be up in 2021. The 40 year old Swiss Superstar joined the company in 2011, and is believed to signed his latest deal five years ago.

The prospect of one of the best wrestlers in the world hitting the free agent market was enticing for a lot of fans. It was also something that probably perked up ears in places like Jacksonville and Tokyo, and gave folks in Stamford some pause.

Which is why it’s not surprising to hear that WWE did what they had to to keep Cesaro in the fold. This week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter says he’s agreed to a new deal. No specifics were included in Dave Meltzer’s write-up, and it’s also not clear if he’s inked his contract extension or just agreed to it in principle. But either way, sounds like you can stop fantasy booking that Cesaro/Tomohiro Ishii match (that’s the one I was fantasy booking, anyway).

Meltzer notes that there was some uncertainty. The gauntlet run Shinsuke Nakamura got on the Jan. 8 SmackDown was apparently supposed to be Cesaro’s spot, but his Artist Collective teammate got it - and the face turn that came along with it - instead because WWE wasn’t sure Cesaro was sticking around.

Cesaro got his own shot to remind us he’s a star on the Jan. 15 edition of the blue brand, when he and Daniel Bryan put on a show. What’s next for the Swiss Cyborg now that he’s going to remain a WWE Superstar?

Stay tuned.
