NXT champion Finn Bálor was this week’s guest on Corey Graves’ After the Bell podcast.
One of the topics they touched on was the current length of Bálor’s return run in NXT. Finn was a mainstay on the WWE main roster from August 2016 through August 2019. He returned to his old stomping grounds at NXT in October 2019, when the promotion began its television deal on the USA network. Bálor is once again a dominant force in NXT as its current champion, and a consistent winner at its TakeOver events.
Bálor told Graves that he actually didn’t expect to be back in NXT for more than three months. Here is his perspective, courtesy of Wrestling Inc’s transcript:
“I didn’t know what to expect. I was kind of under the impression that it was going to be a 3 month deal. Reboot Finn, reset and go back to RAW or go back to SmackDown, go back to things as normal.”
“It’s kind of evolved into something I don’t think anyone expected. I think it’s thanks to how NXT is also evolving and really truly its own brand now. I don’t know what to expect going forward, I don’t know how long it’s going to last but I have to say, I’m super happy in NXT and there’s no reason for me to want to move anywhere in my career at this point.”
Bálor makes it clear that despite his initial impression that a return to NXT was a short-term thing designed to reboot him for the main roster, he’s thrilled to still be with the black-and-gold brand. I imagine the “super happy” part is also related to Bálor’s pay level being far above the typical NXT roster member.
At this point, Bálor’s return to NXT has lasted 16 months with no end in sight. Do you hope to see Finn back on the main roster at some point, or should NXT be his permanent home in WWE?
