Since Dwayne Johnson’s new NBC sitcom Young Rock will presumably spend about a third of its time in the early 1980s when DJ’s ten years old, still living with his parents Rocky Johnson & Ata Maivia in the midst of both families business - pro wrestling.
From early set pictures and the first trailer, we knew that in addition to Soulman, that meant Andre The Giant and Iron Sheik. We’d spied a few other familiar looking faces and IMDB spoiled a few names in the cast list. But Rock laid it all out for us this afternoon, along with an article on The Wrap about the folks playing the wrestling roles on Young Rock.
The surprise is Vince McMahon. Comedian Adam Ray isn’t a well-known name, but he did voice Slimer in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake... so he’ll have Vince and a green blob of ectoplasm on his CV. He better be careful he doesn’t start getting typecast (I kid, I kid).
In case the caption on Johnson’s Instagram don’t show up for you, here’s a rundown of the wrestling cast:
- Matthew Willig as Andre the Giant
- Kevin Makely as Macho Man Randy Savage
- Faiumu Fasitua Amosa and John Tui as Afa and Sika, The Wild Samoans
- Brett Azar as The Iron Shiek
- Nate Jackson as The Junkyard Dog
- Ana Tuisila as Lia Maivia
- Adam Ray as Vince McMahon
Young Rock premieres this Tues., Feb. 16 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC.
