Rey Mysterio will fight the supernatural - in cartoon form

2022 will see the legendary luchador’s new animated series debut on Cartoon Network Latin America.

This week, Rey Mysterio has been teasing big news on social media. Look how excited he was to share it!

If you were hoping this was going to have something to do with his WWE contract, you might be disappointed. But if you’re a fan of Rey, cartoons, pro wrestling-adjacent fun, and/or the tradition of lucha libre genre-hopping adventures pioneered by the late, great El Santo... Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad (The Darkness) is pretty great news.

The 10 episode animated series will premiere on Cartoon Network Latin America next year. Mysterio is serving as an Executive Producer, and says he personally worked with the Mexican studio ¡Viva Calavera! on the project.

Some clips of the show were included in yesterday’s announcements by Rey and the WarnerMedia-owed network, but have since been taken down. The stills provided show a traditional western animation style with a touch of anime that should be up to the task of conveying lucha action both in the ring and when fighting monsters.

The official description:

“Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad tells the story of Oscar, a wrestling fan, who will team up with his idol, Rey Mysterio , to face supernatural beings and fight against the forces of evil; villains from the world of wrestling and characters from Mexican traditions and the world of fantasy. Behind these extraordinary opponents is Uroboros, an evil fighter who uses dark forces that he does not fully understand. Rey Mysterio and Oscar must work together and do their best to defend the city and themselves from his evil plans.”

While there was no mention of when the show will be available in the United States or other non-Latin American countries, this is the streaming age, so I’m confident we’ll all get a chance to watch this at some point.

When Rey jumps out the sky to 6-1-9 Uroboros, will you be watching?
