More Shotzi, please

I spoke about this a bit in the recap (go read it here) but Shotzi deserves a shout of her own for her brief but memorable interview backstage on Friday Night SmackDown this week.

My biggest problem with WWE has long been the fact that everything feels so unnatural. The biggest reason for that is Vince McMahon’s belief that he doesn’t employ wrestlers but rather actors who make movies based around wrestling. The issue with that, of course, is that most of these wrestlers are shitty actors.

Asking them to memorize a script and then go out and deliver a convincing promo of someone else’s words is a surefire way to expose this. We’ve come to a point where the best wrestlers are those who can do the moderate amount of actual wrestling required of them while being convincing enough actors everywhere else. Roman Reigns stands out above the rest in this regard.

Here, I thought Shotzi did a wonderful job of being convincing with the relatively bad copy she was given. “I’ve lost title opportunities, I lost my tag team partner, I lost the support of the WWE Universe.” I mean, come on.

Having said that, her delivery was such that she came across like a woman genuinely in pain who is awfully pissed off about that and just looking for someone to take it out on. I’m still in favor of ditching the reciting of lines in favor of a more relaxed broad strokes approach but if this is what we’re stuck with, give us more Shotzi, please.
