When WWE revealed the 2021 King of the Ring tournament bracket, it seemed obvious how the left side of the bracket would turn out. When Sami Zayn defeated Rey Mysterio in the first round, it made clear the winner of the other first round match on that side would be going to Crown Jewel on Oct. 21 for the final.
That’s because Zayn, who is of Syrian descent and does extensive work with mobile clinics there, never makes the trip to Saudi Arabia for WWE events. That telegraphed the fact that Finn Balor would be defeating Zayn in the semifinal match-up during this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown just days before the event.
Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.
They had one hell of a TV match in the process, at least, with Zayn very nearly scoring the victory had it not been for the referee catching him with his feet on the ropes. Balor missed the first Coup de Grace but he wouldn’t miss the second and that was enough to give him the win.
Balor will meet the winner of the Xavier Woods vs. Jinder Mahal match taking place on Monday Night Raw next week.
