Even before he turned heel and turned most of his haters into fans, you never heard anyone inside WWE say anything negative about Roman Reigns. In fact, we often heard how valued he was. The term “locker room leader” is frequently heard in association with Reigns.
During a recent interview, a guy whose WWE run was anything but smooth spoke about Roman - and it’s our latest example of why he’s so highly thought of by his peers.
Ring of Honor’s Mike Bennett - who went by his wife’s surname Kanellis while working for The ‘E - was on the most recent edition of That 90s Wrestling Podcast and said:
“I mean, Roman is the best, he’s the man. That dude would watch our 205 Live matches and help us after our matches, and would give us good critique. He wouldn’t be like, ‘All you guys are doing too much.’ No, he would be genuine and be like, ‘Hey, if you did this but if you took a second longer after you did this, think about how the crowd would react.’
“And you’re like, ‘Oh!’ Genuine critiques to the point where you’re like, ‘Oh, you’re actually watching our matches at 10 o’clock at night when everyone else has left the building. Thank you.’ He’s great.”
Bennett mentioned NXT’s Tommaso Ciampa and ROH’s Briscoe Brothers as other great locker room leaders. Reigns is the reason he still watches WWE programming, though. And part of that is because of Joe Anoa’i as much as The Tribal Chief.
“Without Roman, I don’t know what I’d be interested in because there’s really nothing else in that company that interests me. But when I put him on with the Usos and with [Paul] Heyman, I’m like, ‘Oof, that’s something special right there.’ You just can’t help but watch when those guys are out there, so I just – not only that, but again, I think the world of him as a human being. So whenever someone’s uber talented, and they’re such a nice human being, they’re just completely over in my book.”
Believe that.
