Drake Maverick returns to 205 Live

New, 10 comments

As part of one of the two Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic first round matches on the Jan. 15 episode of the cruiserweight show.

As many predicted, WWE’s bid to raise 205 Live’s profile by booking Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic matches on the show will involve the teams made up of cruiserweights. The purple brand is focused on the division, after all. Might as well give any NXT fans checking in to keep up with the tournament a taste of what’s regularly on the menu.

They’re baiting the hook with a couple bigger names too though. One of the two matches announced for tonight’s 205 Live is definitely about the show’s regular weight limit. He does have a connection to the cruiserweights though... his partner is in the division, and used to be the General Manager of 205 Live itself!

That’s right, Drake Maverick brings the Furry & the Fury to Friday night. He and his decidedly heavyweight partner Killian Dain will face 205 regulars (and Evolve alums) August Grey & Curt Stallion, with the winners advancing to face MSK in the next round.

In addition to competing for the Dusty Cup and the NXT Tag title shot that comes along with it, Stallion is also the #1 contender to Santos Escobar’s Cruiserweight championship. The champ’s not in this tournament, but his squad is. And Legado Del Fantasma’s Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza also have a match on the Jan. 15 purple show. They’ll face Bollywood Boyz. Whoever wins that one will advance to await the winner of next Wednesday’s Imperium vs. Lucha House Party bout.

Pull up WWE Network tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern (or on Demand whenever you have time after that) to check out this Dusty Classic action. We’ll also update you right here at Cageside Seats. Gotta keep those brackets updated, right?
