What’s going on with the Raw announce team?

For the past couple weeks, Michael Cole has been doing play-by-play for Raw instead of Tom Phillips. Samoa Joe was also away last week, replaced by Dolph Ziggler and MVP.

This hasn’t been presented as a big deal, either on the air or by wrestling news-breakers. It’s probably not a big deal. But PWInsider does have an update about who we might get calling the action tonight (Sept. 21). It clarifies the lead announcer role, but further confusing the issue of who might be joining Byron Saxton on color commentary.

Phillips will be back, so Cole will presumably return to only calling SmackDown.

Mike Johnson of Insider also mentions that Jerry Lawler is in Orlando. He doesn’t say that Lawler will be announcing, or doing anything at all on the Clash of Champions go home episode. But his presence could mean he’ll be taking the spot Ziggler & MVP kept warm for Joe last Monday.

And that makes me wonder about rumors we heard last month about the Samoan Submission Machine returning to the ring. Joe had a pair of concussions in quick succession earlier this year, which is always worrying - but especially for a 41 year old entering his third decade in the business. WWE also had an opportunity to transition him into a feud when he got a little involved in the issues between Seth Rollins and the Mysterio clan. They chose not to at that point. Would they just bring him back without an angle now?

Maybe we’ll learn more when we find out who’s joining Phillips and Saxton on the Raw call tonight?

Join us in our live blog and we’ll see what we learn together.
