The next pay-per-view (PPV) on the WWE schedule is the Clash of Champions show set to take place on Sun., Sept. 27, 2020, at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. The event has been dubbed “Gold Rush,” with the idea being only title matches will be featured on the show and every title must be defended.
Here’s how the card looks just one week out from showtime:
- Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Randy Orton (WWE championship)
Orton won a triple threat to become top contender. They played up the possibility that McIntyre wouldn’t be able to make the show after an Orton attack, then walked that back, and are now playing up the possibility that Orton may not make the show after a McIntyre attack. Keith Lee has been around all of this trying to earn his way in, so it’s at least possible this could still change. Oh, it’s also an Ambulance match.
- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jey Uso (Universal championship)
Uso won a Fatal 4-Way match that Reigns got him booked in after Big E was injured. They’ve since played up the fact that they’re family, with Reigns saying he’ll whoop Jey’s ass just like when they were kids and Jey making clear they aren’t kids anymore. They’ve played up Reigns being a family man to Jey’s face while turning dark once Jey turns his back.
- Bayley (c) vs. Nikki Cross (SmackDown women’s championship)
Cross defeated Tamina Snuka, Lacey Evans, and Alexa Bliss in a Fatal 4-Way to determine who would challenge Bayley for the title. These two have hardly interacted while they’ve both been busy in stories with Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss, respectively. Still, it’s happening.
- Jeff Hardy vs. Sami Zayn vs. AJ Styles (Intercontinental championship)
They’re all calling themselves the real Intercontinental champion, even though Jeff is the one holding the official title. They’ll settle it here in a Ladder match.
- Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax vs. The Riott Squad (Women’s tag team championship)
As part of Bayley and Sasha Banks’ push to a breakup, they lost the tag titles to Baszler and Jax. Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott, meanwhile, earned a title match by defeating The IIconics in a “loser has to breakup” match.
- Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Lucha House Party (SmackDown tag team championship)
These two teams have been going at it lately. There isn’t much going on in the SmackDown tag team division right now.
The gimmick here is all titles will be defended, so we still have U.S. championship (Bobby Lashley), Raw tag team championship (The Street Profits), and Raw women’s championship (Asuka) matches to book.
That’s what is official for the card so far.
