It was a good night for champions on NXT

WWE had three titleholders in action, and two belts on the line, during the Sept. 16 edition of NXT.

It was a good night for them.

The action started with the Women’s champion in non-title action. Io Shirai picked up the win, but it was an impressive showing for her opponent Shotzi Blackheart. The announcers put over the match as a star-making turn for green-haired banshee - and especially coming off an attention-grabbing promo earlier in the day, they weren’t lying.

New NXT champ Finn Bálor sat back and announced that challengers would have to fight to get to him - a claim General Manager William Regal backed up later in the show.

Then Breezango showed off all their skill and veteran guile, outlasting Imperium (and staying one step ahead of their dirty tricks) to retain the NXT Tag titles. The tag scene in NXT doesn’t have the star power of the #DIY and Revival era, but Tyler Breeze, Fandango, Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel showed the brand can still deliver an awesome tag match.

The main event saw Damian Priest prove he can hang with an expert mat man like Timothy Thatcher, at least long enough for his impressive combination of power & agility turns the tide. The Archer of Infamy fought through a numb arm to hit The Reckoning and keep his North American title.

So yeah, it was a good night for champions on Sept. 16. They better enjoy it, because with TakeOver coming on Oct. 4, most of these folks are about to be tested again.
