Rey Mysterio has apparently been working without a WWE contract for a little while now. He was written off television at Extreme Rules, but with an out which would allow him to be brought back in the event he re-signed.
And reports indicated that was the most likely outcome of negotiations between Vince McMahon and the legendary luchador. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer says that’s still the case, but AEW matching the per-match amount in WWE’s last offer has apparently slowed things down.
WWE seems to have the advantage due to a couple of things.
One is that while the pay per match is the same, WWE is promising more dates. Meltzer didn’t have the specific term of their latest offer, but writes it’s “considerably longer than the previous deal (18 months), but not the five-years or longer deals that WWE has tried to get everyone on.”
The other factor is Rey’s son Dominik. The younger Mysterio is booked to make his in-ring debut against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam later this month. Dominik’s presence in WWE is a huge incentive for the former WWE champ, as he’s frequently said working a match with his son would be a dream come true.
It’s not clear what kind of deal Dominik is signed to at this point.
Stay tuned.
