The latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter makes note of a couple internal meetings Vince McMahon held last week around the release of WWE’s second quarter financials. In the second meeting, McMahon is said to have mentioned three members of the WWE women’s roster he sees as stars.
One of the names is obvious based on recent episodes of Raw and SmackDown. The other two will probably surprise you, though.
Here’s what Dave Meltzer wrote:
“There was a meeting during the day before the investment call on 7/30 described as brutal as Vince approved nothing. They had another meeting on 7/31 which lasted four hours. He did talk forever about how much he loves Bayley and her new persona and that he sees Peyton Royce and Bianca Belair as singles stars.”
As I said, Bayley inclusion tracks. She just celebrated 300 days as SmackDown Women’s champion, and has been one of WWE’s marquee attractions of the pandemic era. Necessity may have helped create the opportunity for Dos Straps’ heel character to be a big deal, but she’s taken the ball and run with it. If McMahon wasn’t on board, the plug would have been pulled by now.
Others have seen the talent and potential both Royce and Belair possess, but it’s a little unexpected to hear they were singled out by Vince. Peyton’s had stretches of consistent TV time, but usually in a comedy or enhancement role (even during her lengthy Women’s Tag title run with IIconics partner Billie Kay). Belair has rarely graced the screen on Monday nights since her call-up, despite the depleted roster over the past several months. She does look to be getting more involved with her husband - Montez Ford of Street Profits - and his feud with Zelina Vega’s team of Angel Garza & Andrade, however, so that could be finally be changing.
Unless, of course, McMahon changes his mind. We hear that’s been known to happen a time or two in the past...
