Rey Mysterio & Dominik vs. Seth Rollins & Murphy
Rey Mysterio must be loving this.
Being able to wrestle alongside his son Dominik has to be a dream come true for the legendary luchador. This entire program Rey has been having with Seth Rollins has served as a vehicle to introduce his son to the WWE fans and allow Mysterio to work with him. It was likely a sticking point to Rey re-signing with WWE.
Mysterio is 45 years old and has sustained plenty of injuries during his career as the biggest little man ever. There’s no doubt he’s in the twilight years of his career. It should be no surprise he’s going to spend those years in the same company Dominik will be working, taking the chance to get to work with him and help his son grow as a wrestler and person.
Tonight at the Payback, he gets to team with Dominik on a pay-per-view, though this will be their second time doing so.
Father and son teamed up for the first time last Monday to take on Seth Rollins & Murphy. This was coming off Rollins with over Dominik at SummerSlam, the younger Mysterio’s first match ever in WWE (and according to Cagematch, his first match ever).
Their tag match on Raw did not have a finish as RETRIBUTION attacked the Mysterio clan, but didn’t seem to bother Seth or Murphy. Perhaps Rollins has some connection or even control over the masked attackers. Perhaps he just got lucky. That’s something we the viewer are supposed ponder as the story progresses.
Because the bout had no winner or loser, it gave WWE a reason to rerun the match tonight at Payback. It could have a couple endings. The Mysterios can get a win together, and celebrate in the ring in a touching family moment. The heels can keep their dominant streak going. Or this can go a third way.
Dominik can turn on his father.
This would accomplish a few things:
It would allow Dominik to work with Seth Rollins, a veteran in the business and a fantastic wrestler. Seth runs his own school so has some experience in training as well. Mysterio may not be on TV every week, but Dom would still have someone he can learn a ton from.
A heel turn could also lead to a match between Dominik and Rey. That’s got to be something Rey wants to do before his career is up. To share the ring and tell a story with his would be something special.
Also, this would just be a good twist to the story, and a twist that makes sense. Seth Rollins is recruiting disciples from men who are lost. Men who are unsure of themselves. Dominik is a young man who could easily be manipulated throughout all this. The Monday Night Messiah could easily capitalize on that.
We’ll see which way they go tonight. Dom will be surrounded by three strong workers to help him along as they tell whichever story they decide to tell.
Dominik and Rey Mysterio team up against Seth Rollins and Murphy as part of their long blood flood tonight on Payback at 7 PM ET. Keep it here to CagesideSeats.com for all your Payback coverage.
