Remember Viktor & Konnor, former NXT Tag champs The Ascension? Their main roster run started bad when D-X, the APA, and the New Age Outlaws clowned them at Raw Reunion. They got a win over Road Dogg & Billy Gunn, but it never really got better. It did allow them to show off their comedic chops on Breezango’s Fashion Files, though! So... that was cool.
The duo were released by WWE back in December 2019, and worked a handful of indie shows as Big Kon & Vik in the small window between their non-competes expiring and the pandemic shutting everything down. They never got a chance to unveil a new team name though.
Until last week, when they revealed their new name to WrestleZone, along with a rejected idea.
Vik: We just got our new name basically, thankfully enough. We were going to use ‘FKA’ for the time being just because we liked that. We knew everybody just knew us as The Ascension for the longest time, and to jump off [of that], we couldn’t really figure it out for a while. We’d been talking back and forth so much, going through all of these other ideas and it kinda got presented to us the other week via interview… do you want to tell him?
Big Kon: The Awakening. It’s like it’s the next step up from The Ascension. It’s still got that connection so the fans can understand it and it’s something that Vik and I think is badass regardless.
“FKA” - as in “formerly known as” - is pretty funny. But it’s not super marketable, and there are already a couple guys doing the ambiguous acronym gimmick over at AEW.
The Awakening works for the reasons FKA Konnor describes, though. Sounds like a winner.
Now let’s talk about “Big Kon”...
