The above fallout interview with Sasha Banks & Bayley is pretty much what you’d expect from the pair shortly after The Boss won the Raw Women’s title by countout to give The Golden Role Models all of the main roster belts.
There’s cackling, enough tongue popping to make Alyssa Edwards envious, and a dismissal of Sarah Shreiber. If you enjoy The Two Woman Power Trip’s act and/or love to hate them, you’ll dig it. If you don’t find them entertaining or are legitimately annoyed by their schtick... probably don’t click play.
It also features Sasha teasing that the duo may still have one more belt to collect... Io Shirai’s NXT Women’s title. Which got me thinking about a couple of complaints I’d seen floating around the interwebs about Two Beltz Banks and Bayley Dos Straps, and why I don’t buy them.
Before we get into that though, I’ll confess to being someone who is entertained by the Role Models. A lot. Probably to the point of markdom. That colors my analysis for sure, even though I objectively stand behind the points I’ll make. If you don’t enjoy them, well, there’s nothing I can say to change that. So I’ll just say I empathize with your frustration. I’ve been there with things like Triple H’s reign over Raw in the aughts, or the recent Charlotte Three Shows run.
The criticism of those things that I’ve seen leveled against The Two Woman Power Trip that I just don’t buy is that they’re hurting or (gasp!) burying the rest of the division.
Neither Bayley or Sasha take a lot of losses, but they do lose. The former Hugster was beaten by both Asuka & Kairi Sane in service of Banks’ feud with The Empress, and The Boss did the job for Shirai. That last one wasn’t exactly clean, but it was less dirty than many of the Role Models’ wins. Pulling out all the illegal stops to beat people isn’t the same as putting people over, but it’s better than nothing.
Compare it to Flair, who only has a handful of televised losses this year, and only two by pinfall - one where Bayley had the ropes and a handful of tights, another where Nia Jax had injured The Queen before she faced Asuka. And the most egregious thing might be that no one in NXT pinned or submitted Charlotte during her reign as the brand’s Women’s champ.
We’ve also got a lot of other storylines featuring women happening while Banks & Bayley do their thing.
SmackDown has Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross chasing Bayley & Sasha and maybe falling apart in the process, plus heat between Naomi and Lacey Evans while Sonya Deville/Mandy Rose simmers. Raw just started a Shayna Baszler/Nia Jax program, Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan or Bianca Belair have issues with IIconics, Lana & Natalya are in the process of forming a team, and Asuka is definitely not done with Banks or Bayley. NXT is, as of now, unaffected by the Power Trip.
There are always going to be issues. It would be great if Belair was doing something other than subbing into another program. But I don’t think she’d be in a different boat if they weren’t doing The Two Woman Power Trip.
And as a big Asuka fan, I’d hoped her reign would include, you know, an actual PPV title defense. But her story with the Role Models isn’t over yet, and after living through plenty of WWE babyfaces who’d steal their friends’ girl and drop poop on enemies they’d already beaten (okay, that was all just John Cena), I’m happy to be in an era where Drew McIntyre takes on all comers and Asuka chooses her friend over personal success.
To folks who would say Sasha & Bayley having all the gold gives the other women nothing to do, I’d refer you back to Becky Lynch’s favorite saying: WWE is in the conflict business. If a convincing story can be crafted to put two characters in conflict with one another, and the performers can make you care who wins and who loses that conflict, then they have something to do.
Titles are a shortcut to tell that story. They can enhance a feud, sure. But they can also be a lazy way to get around telling it at all. As already mentioned, there are a lot of stories happening for the main roster women who are around (and we haven’t even touched on the extraordinary circumstances which have caused WWE to lean on first Charlotte, and now fka The Boss & Hug Connection). If they don’t matter to you, I’m not sure how that’s The Two Woman Power Trip’s fault.
It’s also pretty clear they’re not gonna vacate the titles and ride off into the sunset victorious. Either because they implode or someone kicks their asses, these two are headed for a comeuppance. Hopefully the journey to that destination is full of matches as good as the ones we’ve seen over the last month. Given they’ll be executed by some of the most talented pro wrestlers in the world, I’m confident we’ve got some bangers ahead.
So again, sorry if it’s not your cuppa. But I’m excited for the reign of our tongue popping champ-champs, and whatever comes with & after it. I also don’t see it as doing any harm to the rest of WWE’s women. On the contrary, from what I can tell, Sasha & Bayley’s story and performances are helping.
So go get that NXT Women’s title, you Golden Role Models. And while you’re at, try to end Kay Lee Ray’s historic run, too.
