The match

Edge vs. Randy Orton in THE GREATEST WRESTLING MATCH EVER at WWE Backlash on Sun., June 14, 2020, from the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

The story

What do you even do when you’re told by the promoters that they’ve chosen to promote your next match this way? For Orton, you just be yourself and tell people to tune in to see if they can actually deliver or if they shit the bed completely. For Edge, you laugh at first, then, once you realize they’re being serious, you turn it into one man’s pursuit to prove to himself he’s still the elite wrestler he once was.

This match, then, isn’t so much about these two actually having the GREATEST WRESTLING MATCH EVER but rather Edge proving that after all his time away due to injury he’s actually capable of having it. Orton, the heel here, has been playing the role of the antagonizer teasing it out of him.

Later, even Edge’s friends and loved ones echoed the fan sentiment that, well, yeah, there’s no way in hell he can have THE GREATEST WRESTLING MATCH EVER. The idea, again, isn’t for Edge to prove them wrong by doing it, it’s to see how he reacts to being told he can’t.

But while I can appreciate that thought process, it almost creates an impossible situation. If they have anything less than an incredible, unforgettable bout than it will be considered a failure.

There’s also something that feels wrong about this story switching up to be about the quality of a wrestling match as opposed to a man wanting to beat up another man for putting his hands on that man’s wife.

I don’t know.

Either way, here we are.

It should be noted the match has already been taped and the word that got around was it was good. We won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

Follow along right here.
