WWE SmackDown preview (May 8, 2020): Mystery partner!

New, comments

WWE SmackDown returns tonight (May 8) from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. It is the go home show for the Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) this Sunday.

Tonight is the go-home show for Money in the Bank. But while it’s the last stop prior to Sunday’s PPV, the thing that has my attention for tonight is not really PPV related.

Instead, it’s MYSTERY PARTNER!

That’s right, WWE is giving us the ol’ mystery partner treatment today. Something that’s fun to speculate about but in the end usually disappoints when it’s revealed. But we’re not at the reveal yet. We’re at the speculation point. So let’s have some fun with that.

To set the stage, Daniel Bryan and Drew Gulak need to find a partner to face King Corbin, Cesaro, and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Corbin, Cesaro, and Shin have delivered beatings to both these men, and they’re looking for revenge. In regards to the PPV on Sunday, Bryan and Corbin are part of the Money in the Bank match. The others are not involved.

Let’s get started with the obvious:

The Smart Money Pick: Elias

Elias was taken out by King Corbin’s brutal beating weeks ago, including a scepter to his throat, targeting his vocal cords, and a couple broken fingers, hampering his guitar playing ability. No doubt Elias will be back to feud with Corbin eventually. The question is will it be tonight?

He makes the most sense here. But if he really wants to hurt the King in his return, he’d hold out until Sunday to cost him the Money in the Bank match, jumping out of a janitor’s closet in WWE HQ or something.

If we stick with the MITB theme, there is a man who doesn’t have a match tonight that could slot in here. And that’s Otis.

The Most Likely to Put Smiles on Faces: Otis

Otis is the third SmackDown competitor for the briefcase match so including him here makes plenty of sense. He’d be a fun odd couple pairing for the technical savvy Daniel Bryan and Drew Gulak. However, he doesn’t have any beef with Corbin’s crew (though he surely has a stash of beef somewhere) and he’s more likely to be involved in Mandy Rose’s match with Sonya Deville than he is here.

Other Technical Competitors/Family Members: Shorty G

If Drew and Bryan want someone who has more finesse in the ring than Blue Collar Solid Otis, maybe DB picks the man who is probably his son in Chad Gable.

Bryan likes to use his veteran status to showcase wrestlers who don’t get much time. He’s doing that with Drew Gulak right now. Well Gable is a man who fits that bill (if he’s not the mystery hacker). Other 205 Live guys, such as Oney Lorcan, can also serve as someone Daniel Bryan opts to put a light on.

The “ Oh Of Course” Guy: Big Show

Never count out the Big Show to jump into a feud he’s not a part of for a couple weeks.

Let us know your guesses below.

The Title Scene:

Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman will stand face to face days before their clash on Sunday. The Universal Champion is tired of Wyatt’s game. So no Firefly Fun House this week. They’ll meet in person.

SmackDown Women’s champion Bayley will team with her bff Sasha Banks to face Tamina (who faces Bayley for the title at Money in the Bank) and Lacey Evans, who’s in the MITB match. With Sasha not in the ladder match, her friendship with Bayley likely has some time left to it. Her holding the briefcase would be a huge wedge.

Sami Zayn and his Intercontinental championship are still not around. I wonder if he’s going to be home for awhile if they’ll end up stripping him of the title.

The New Day have to defend their SmackDown tag team championships in a fatal 4-way on Sunday. They’ll be facing Miz & Morrison, the Forgotten Sons, and the Lucha House Party. The numbers logically aren’t in their favor but teams often retain in fatal 4-ways.

Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross are the Women’s tag team champions but right now don’t have a program.

Other things to keep an eye on:

- That Mandy Rose/Sonya Deville match is the first match of a story that’s been really entertaining. It’s very possible they book this to continue to Sunday.

- Jeff Hardy’s comeback continues. Sheamus doesn’t like it. It’s a feud that’s going to happen, though there’s a lot of work to do before this is an exciting one.

2 days till Money in the Bank! What will you be watching when SmackDown airs tonight at 8 PM on Fox?
