Interesting possibilities remain in NXT’s Interim Cruiserweight Title Tournament

We only had two matches in the NXT Interim Cruiserweight Championship Tournament on the May 6 episode of WWE’s black-and-gold show. But those two matches set us for an intriguing second half of the round-robin tourney.

Despite being used as enhancement talent on Raw, Akira Tozawa picked up another win in Group A. By defeating Gentleman Jack Gallagher, Tozawa retains control over his own destiny. If he can beat El Hijo del Fantasma, he’ll advance to the finals. If the newly signed luchador beats him, Fantasma will advance due to their identical records and the head-to-head tiebreaker... as long as Isaiah “Swerve” Scott doesn’t beat Gallagher. Scott holds the tiebreaker over Fantasma by virtue of his win last week.

Over in Group B, there are a similar number of moving parts. Kushida submitted Jake Atlas tonight, and can cruise to the finals by beating Drake Maverick. But if the recently released wrestler upsets the Super Junior legend, they’ll have identical records and Maverick will hold the tiebreaker. But if Atlas wins his last match over Tony Nese, he’ll also be 2 - 1, and he holds the tiebreaker over Drake.

What’s not clear is what NXT will do if three wrestlers in either group (or both of them) end up tied at two wins a piece with each of the three holding a win over one of the others.

Here’s the updated standings:

Group A

Kushida (2-0)
Jake Atlas (1-1)
Drake Maverick (1-1)
Tony Nese (0-2)

Group B

Akira Tozawa (2-0)
Isaiah “Swerve” Scott (1-1)
El Hijo del Fantasma (1-1)
Gentleman Jack Gallagher (0-2)

And the remaining matches. NXT hasn’t announced any of these yet, but expect them to be scheduled for maximum drama!

Kushida vs. Maverick (Kushida advances to the finals with a win)
Atlas vs. Nese

Tozawa vs. Fantasma (Tozawa advances to the finals with a win)
Scott vs. Gallagher
