Becky Lynch is looking to follow in the footsteps of John Cena and Dwayne Johnson, and she moved along that path last night with her cameo on the season five premiere of Showtime’s Billions.
What did she do in her three minutes on the show? The short, don’t-need-to-be-a-regular-Billions-viewer answer is this... Lynch played herself. Or perhaps I should say Rebecca Quin played her usual WWE character of “Becky Lynch”?
Anyway, a more detailed explanation is that it wasn’t that different from some of her recent Raw appearances. Except that she got to say “motherfucker”. Lynch staged a fight with Maggie Siff’s Wendy Rhoades at the offices of Axe Cap, the investment firm at the center of the show. That was revealed to be a work, and Becky was revealed as an outside client of Rhoades, who is the firm’s in-house therapist/performance coach. The Man then cut a kayfabe-busting promo about how what she had just done was put Wendy over, and how important it is to do that for your opponents in wrestling, even if you don’t like them.
This tied into Billions kayfabe because Axe Cap recently merged with another firm, Mase Cap (that started as a department within the company but broke off and feuded with them before being brought back as part of a larger scheme... Billions is very pro wrestling), and tensions are running high in the office.
There are clips of the appearance floating around the interwebs, if you’re interested, but ViacomCBS-owned Showtime seems to be getting them taken down as they find them. Overall, Lynch was great in a role that - like all Billions celebrity guest spots, IMHO - was equal parts cool & cringe.
Neither Damien Lewis’ Bobby Axelrod or Asia Kate Dillon’s Taylor Mason, the heads of the companies involved in the tag team break-up/reunion/probable future double-cross storyline, seem that impressed with Becky’s message of sacrifice for the greater good. But everyone involved was impressed with the real experience of working together.
There she is The FUCKING MAN! @BeckyLynchWWE just killing it. We all kind of lost our minds at how kick ass she was. Also, getting the word KayFabe on Billions really feels good.— Brian Koppelman (@briankoppelman) May 4, 2020
